Explore the Patuxai Victory Monument in Vientiane, Laos

Patuxai is one of the most famous monuments in Vientiane, the capital of Laos. The name means ‘victory gate’ and it’s dedicated to the Laotian fight for independence from the French in the 1940s. This travel guide will explain how to get there, and everything you need to know before you go!

What To Expect

If you’ve been to Paris before, you’ll notice that the design of Patuxai Monument is strikingly similar to the famous Arc de Triomphe. This building was modeled after the Arc, but it incorporates local elements such as Buddhist figures and stupa-shaped points on the top. Consequently, many visitors find that Patuxai possesses a unique charm.

At the top of the monument, you can enjoy a panoramic 360-degree view of the vibrant city of Vientiane.

Entrance Fees

Visiting the monument is entirely free; there are no fees involved for walking around. However, if you wish to ascend to the top of the monument, there is a small fee of 3,000 kip (which is less than one US dollar).

How To Get To Patuxai Monument

Patuxai is conveniently situated in the Vientiane city center. Given the city’s manageable size, you can easily walk to the monument from nearby accommodations. Many travelers find that walking enhances their experience, allowing them to take in the local sights along the way.

Moreover, bicycles and taxis are readily available. Tuk-tuk taxis are also positioned nearby, making it simple to secure a ride back to your hotel if needed.

Where I Stayed

I stayed at Vayakorn Inn in Vientiane for $29 USD per night. For this price, I enjoyed a clean twin room equipped with cold A/C and a comfortable bed. While there are cheaper hotel options available in Vientiane, the prime location of this inn was a significant advantage, and I was more than satisfied with the room and amenities.

There are fantastic restaurants just a two-minute walk from the hotel, and I found it easy to reach the Patuxai Victory Monument in about 20 minutes on foot.
