The Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall in Taipei city is one of Taiwan’s most famous landmarks. This place is a must-see if you’re ever in Taipei, along with the Liberty Square and its impressive gate. The architecture here is remarkable, dedicated to an important figure in Taiwanese history. This travel guide will explain how to get there and everything you need to know before visiting!
Liberty Square Taipei
The Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall is part of Taipei’s Liberty Square, a vibrant public plaza featuring multiple landmarks and a monumental Chinese gate at the entrance. The gate is certainly a sight to behold.
Additionally, visitors may find joy in renting a qipao (traditional Chinese dress) for picturesque photos against the backdrop of these magnificent structures. At night, the gate illuminates beautifully, creating a stunning view.
Inside the plaza, you’ll encounter two prominent structures: the National Concert Hall and the National Theater of Taiwan.
Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall
The blue and white Chiang Kai Shek memorial building is located at the rear of Liberty Square. It is dedicated to General Chiang Kai-shek, the Chinese military leader known for his resistance against communists and the Japanese during the 20th century. Despite his efforts, he ultimately lost that battle, which resulted in his flight to Taiwan—a country that thrives in freedom today.
This memorial building is indeed impressive and shares a slight resemblance to Beijing’s Temple of Heaven, albeit with a less ornate appearance, in my opinion.
Inside, visitors can explore a small museum—more like a mini-museum—and watch the hourly changing of the guard ceremony, a fascinating event worth witnessing.
How To Get There
The Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall is conveniently located in the Zhongzheng District of Taipei city. Accessing this landmark is straightforward via public transportation, with the nearest metro station just a one-minute walk away!
