Having spent over a decade in Montreal, it’s clear to me that the city is a paradise for food enthusiasts. This vibrant metropolis is bursting with culinary treasures that you won’t find anywhere else.
Every local has their preferred dining haunts, and below are some of my absolute favorites that showcase the best of Montreal’s diverse food scene.
Breakfast
Brunch in Montreal is not just a meal; it’s an event. Many establishments attract long queues every Sunday. When it comes to breakfast, indulging in a classic Montreal-style bagel is essential. These light, sesame-covered gems are typically served with cream cheese and smoked salmon. My go-to spot is Bagel Etc., known for its fluffy Fairmount bagels. Recently, I discovered Arthur’s Nosh Bar, where the syrniki cottage-cheese pancakes are so delightful that they could compete with my beloved bagels.
If you wish to avoid the long waits, I recommend visiting either of the iconic Mile End bagel factories: St-Viateur Bagel or Fairmount Bagel.
Coffee
Montreal’s café scene is another highlight that I truly miss when I’m away. The city boasts a range of hip cafés offering fantastic coffee and delicious pastries.
Coffee aficionados will relish the options available in Montreal, thanks to numerous cafés categorized under the “third wave,” with a focus on fair trade and organic beans. Personally, I enjoy the ambiance at Le Dépanneur Cafe in the Mile End, where the vibe is ever so welcoming. Another beautiful spot is Crew Café located in an exquisite former bank building, offering both a striking aesthetic and superb coffee.
Lunch
For a classic taste of Montreal, Schwartz’s Deli is the quintessential choice for Montreal-style smoked meat served with rye bread. However, if you’re looking for something more local, consider Snowdon Deli, where you’ll find an authentic representation of this beloved dish.
If vegetarian options are more appealing, Santropol near McGill University serves a remarkable sandwich called the Duluth, featuring caramelized onions, pears, cheddar cheese, and arugula between thick pumpernickel bread.
Poutine, the province’s signature dish, can be sampled in Montreal at places like La Banquise or Ma Poule Mouillée, which complements its poutine with spicy Portuguese chicken—a perfect choice to take along for a picnic at a nearby park.
Aperitivo
Montreal’s parks—such as Laurier, La Fontaine, and Jarry—are perfect for enjoying a leisurely afternoon. You’re allowed to drink outdoors as long as you enjoy a substantial meal alongside your alcoholic beverages. A simple picnic with wine, cheese, and bread is ideal for people-watching.
Additionally, Montreal’s terrasses—patios that extend onto the street—become popular during warmer months. Dispensaire, a craft brewery on rue Prince-Arthur, and Messorem, near the Lachine Canal, offer wonderful environments to enjoy a drink and relax.
Dinner
With a staggering choice of over 4,000 dining options, choosing where to eat in Montreal can be daunting. Damas serves a wonderful Syrian menu with an exquisite tasting menu, which may stretch your budget. However, Vin Mon Lapin, known for its natural wines and small plates, has gained a reputation as one of the best spots in Canada.
Add another gem to your dining experience with Sushi Momo, where plant-based sushi is both innovative and highly enjoyable. For a more relaxed atmosphere, Elena is a cozy spot for pizza paired with natural wine.
Bar
For an enjoyable evening out, my favorite bar in Montreal is Else’s. It offers a vibrant atmosphere with trendy patrons, intimate lighting, and great drinks. For an impressive outing, consider Bar George, which boasts impressive decor and a sophisticated ambiance. If you’re seeking a laid-back, local spot, check out the legendary dive bar, Grumpys, known for its relaxed vibe and friendly locals.
Cheers to delicious dining adventures in Montreal, and bon appétit!
