Discover Exciting Off-Roading Trails in Abu Dhabi’s Deserts

Off-Road Driving Adventures in Abu Dhabi

Visiting the incredible dune-sculpted deserts outside Abu Dhabi city is a must when exploring the capital of the United Arab Emirates. However, reaching these stunning terrains necessitates going off-road. Previously, joining a tour with an experienced 4WD off-road driver was the preferred option, but now Abu Dhabi has launched six self-drive off-roading routes suitable for all levels of driving experience.

The routes included in the Off-Road Driving in Abu Dhabi Project span the sands around Abu Dhabi emirate, including areas near the oasis of Al Ain and through Al Dhafra. This region edges the vast Empty Quarter and has served as a stunning backdrop for several films, including 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

According to Ali Hassan Al Shaiba, the executive director of Tourism and Marketing at the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism, “Abu Dhabi is a wonderful destination for adventurers and those looking to connect with nature, thanks to its diverse and rugged landscape. Off-Road Driving in Abu Dhabi will provide adventurers with the opportunity to explore Abu Dhabi’s beautiful landscape and embark on exciting and varying adventures throughout the year.”

The journeys will guide travelers past scenic points and wildlife areas, including opportunities to spot camels and gazelles, as well as secluded locations perfect for overnight camping. The shortest route takes approximately four hours to drive, while the longest, which navigates some of the largest sand dunes in the country, could extend to two days of driving. For safety, it is recommended that drivers travel in a convoy of at least three vehicles, with safety checklists and instructions provided. Additionally, local tour operators offer desert driving courses for those who lack prior experience.

For specifics regarding the routes, travelers can find details and links to Google Maps on the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism website.
