Academy Museum of Motion Pictures Opens in September with Hayao Miyazaki Exhibit

Academy Museum of Motion Pictures to Feature Hayao Miyazaki Exhibit

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures is set to open soon in Los Angeles, with an exciting new exhibit for Studio Ghibli fans.

After several delays, the museum will officially welcome visitors on September 30, 2021. The inaugural exhibit will be entirely devoted to the renowned animator Hayao Miyazaki and his iconic films.

Until now, experiencing a substantial collection of artifacts from Miyazaki’s illustrious career has been nearly impossible for North American fans. Conversely, a museum in Japan focuses solely on Miyazaki and his production company, Studio Ghibli. Consequently, anyone residing in the U.S. must travel (or take a virtual tour) to explore behind the scenes of this famous studio.

This remarkable exhibit will be organized into seven thematic sections, each guided by Mei, the four-year-old lead from “My Neighbor Totoro.” Visitors can expect to explore the enchanting worlds of Miyazaki’s most cherished films, such as “Princess Mononoke” and “Kiki’s Delivery Service,” as well as delve into earlier works and view a selection of production materials, essays, and examples of the animator’s television projects. Furthermore, the museum will host film screenings in both Japanese and English.

Designed by the talented architect Renzo Piano, the museum represents the largest space in the U.S. dedicated to films and filmmaking. The Academy Museum has transformed the Saban Building, located in Miracle Mile near the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). An impressive spherical structure accompanies the historic building, incorporating a theater and a rooftop terrace with stunning views of the Hollywood Hills. Visitors will experience a perfect blend of historical and contemporary architecture, complemented by 50,000 square feet of exhibition space and a 288-seat performance venue.

Located at the intersection of Wilshire Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue, the museum’s operating hours and ticket prices have yet to be announced. For additional information about visiting this fall, check The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures’ website.
