Acura Sedan Unveiled: Unraveling the Mystery of the Bold Design

New Acura Sedan Patent: A Potential RLX Successor

Patent drawings are among the least appealing ways to convey a new car’s design. The images, often flat and drawn to scale, can lack the perspective that helps a car’s curves and shapes stand out. The recently published Honda patent from Japan depicting an Acura might eventually come to life, but it presents a significant “if,” particularly due to its exaggerated front end.

Design Characteristics of Modern Acura Vehicles

Modern Honda vehicles, including those under the luxury brand Acura, typically exhibit considerable front overhang—excess bodywork positioned ahead of the front wheels. This design characteristic is partly a result of their front-wheel-drive architecture. Observing the side views of a modern Civic or Accord showcases a similar design trend where the elongated noses become prominent features.

Examining the Design Study of the Acura Sedan

The patent suggests this Acura is a mere design study of a car that may never enter production. The profile hints at visual tricks, as the overhead view indicates a sharp nose. However, the side view reveals a significantly exaggerated length, while the rest of the design closely resembles today’s Honda Accord sedan, featuring well-aligned roof pillars and doors.

Design Similarities and Potential Future

The apparent scale of this Acura raises interesting questions—specifically, the wheels seem proportionately smaller and the exhaust outlets are less pronounced compared to the midsize Acura TLX currently available. This design might be intended for a different, larger vehicle altogether.

Interestingly, the styling is markedly dramatic, aligning with a range-topping sedan’s expectations. Features such as full-width lighting signatures, a distinct Acura grille resembling a perforated bumper surface, and an extended hood give it a striking appearance. Furthermore, hints of internal combustion are evident with the quartet of exhaust pipes visible from the rear bumper.

The Future of the RLX

The patent filing for this design, recently published after being filed in 2017, references Acura’s large Precision sedan concept from 2016, suggesting it was potentially envisioned as a successor to the RLX or Legend. Although Acura has not confirmed its plans, speculation lingers about the reintroduction of the RLX in some form. If Acura considers reviving the RLX, it could utilize the advanced technology from existing models, possibly revamping the vehicle under the Legend badge known in other markets.

While the future remains uncertain, the design study indicates that this Acura concept was well-progressed. Thus, it opens discussions about Acura’s next moves in the luxury vehicle segment, particularly regarding performance and design advancements.
