Aeolian Islands Exploration by Oceana Europe
In June 2018, the Oceana Europe organisation sent its Ranger ship on a month-long mission in the Tyrrhenian Sea to the Aeolian Islands, a group of eight volcanic islands located north of Sicily, in Italy, which are also recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Mission Objectives
The primary objective of the mission was to explore the deep sea surrounding the islands. This area has been largely overlooked and is home to various marine species that remain unknown. Consequently, the mostly Spanish crew of the Ranger successfully documented the existence of lush coral forests around the underwater volcanoes as well as species never before seen in the region at depths exceeding 1000 meters.
Impact of Findings
The findings from Oceana Europe will play a crucial role in establishing a natural marine reserve around the islands. This initiative aims to preserve their delicate ecosystem. Moreover, the stunning images captured by the crew make it possible for everyone to appreciate the islands’ breathtaking beauty.
