1. Overview
Fairbanks is recognized as a prime destination for witnessing the northern lights. With the addition of new accommodations at the Borealis Basecamp, the experience is set to be even more enchanting.
2. New Accommodations
Since opening in 2017, Borealis Basecamp, situated 25 miles from Fairbanks, has become a favorite spot for aurora enthusiasts thanks to its unique igloo accommodations. Recently, five new glass cube accommodations have been introduced to enhance the viewing experience. Each of the new cubes measures 12 feet tall, 13 feet wide, and 32 feet long, featuring a northeastern wall made of crystal-clear Arctic glass, providing unobstructed views of the spectacular night sky.
The Borealis Basecamp sprawls over 100 acres within a boreal forest, offering prime dark-sky viewing. Each igloo is furnished with modern amenities including flushable toilets, heated toilet seats, and rainfall showers. One of the new accommodations can accommodate a family of five, while the other units can host a couple along with a child.
Adriel Butler, the owner of Borealis Basecamp, expressed excitement about the new developments, saying, “We spread the cubes out more to allow for more privacy and to let guests immerse themselves in the boreal forest.” The new locations promise an experience unlike any other in the heart of nature.
3. Pricing and Booking Information
The new aurora viewing accommodations will be available as part of two-to-four-night packages starting November 15, with prices beginning at $1,794 per person.
4. Summer Stays and Activities
This year, Borealis Basecamp also introduces summer stays in dome igloos. While Fairbanks experiences a vibrant aurora season from August 21 to April 21, the summer months offer nearly 24 hours of sunlight, making it an entirely different experience.
According to Butler, “Many guests have shown interest in staying here in the summer, so this was a natural extension for us.” To maximize the enjoyment of the long summer days, the igloos have been fitted with automatic canopy beds and are coupled with experiential packages, starting at $591 per person, which include round-trip transportation from Fairbanks.
5. Unique Activities
Visitors to Borealis Basecamp can enjoy a variety of activities, including:
- Guided driving tours to the Arctic Circle via Dalton Highway
- UTV rides through the White Mountains Recreation Area
- Reindeer walking tours
- Visits to Alaska sled dog kennels with photo opportunities
These tours, along with dining experiences at the newly expanded Latitude 65 restaurant, are available to travelers regardless of their accommodation at Borealis Basecamp.
