Wine-dark seas, lemon groves, and stacks of pastel-hued houses perched perilously on a stretch of craggy coastline—it’s not a dream. You’re on Italy’s Amalfi Coast.

However, your only concern should be reaching its most stunning destinations. While some may dream of driving a classic Italian Vespa, navigating the Amalfi Coast’s notoriously treacherous roads can be a daunting task.

Moreover, driving here often leads to insane traffic and exorbitant parking fees, if you can find a spot at all. A scooter can be convenient, but only if you’re an experienced driver.

Now for some good news: There’s an extensive public transit network that allows you to reach nearly any destination you desire—provided you plan carefully. Trust me, utilizing public transport is often a better option than tackling the chaotic SS163 state road during peak season.

Step 1: Create a Watertight Itinerary…But Be Realistic

Find the right balance of activities

With so much to see and so little time, it’s crucial to limit your itinerary to a few selected destinations if you’re relying on public transport. Here are the region’s greatest hits, broadly organized by public-transport-friendliness:

The Superstar Coastal Villages

The towns between Amalfi and Salerno are easily accessible by ferry or the 5570 SITA bus. However, note that the last ferry from Positano leaves in the late afternoon during high season, so planning is essential.

Ravello

This hilltop village is just a brief bus ride from Amalfi (SITA 5110), but be prepared to transfer if you’re based elsewhere.

The Path of the Gods

Catching the 5080 bus from Amalfi to Agerola (Bomerano) will lead you to the starting point of this iconic clifftop hike. After hiking, reward yourself with a refreshing lemon slushie in Nocelle before descending the (1700!) steps to Positano.

Coastal Beaches and Natural Wonders

The 5570 SITA bus will take you to the Fiordo di Furore and Conca dei Marini beaches, as well as the Grotta dello Smeraldo, known for its phosphorescent green waters. While both locations are close, it’s advisable to choose just one to avoid coordinating bus schedules.

The Sorrento Peninsula

The larger towns on the peninsula’s west coast, such as Sorrento, are linked by the Circumvesuviana train line. Recent updates have increased train frequency between Naples and Salerno, so journeying through the peninsula is now easier than ever.

Step 2: Ace Your Base

Be strategic while considering your budget

When it comes to selecting a base for exploring the Amalfi Coast without a car, Amalfi is your best option with direct connections to major attractions. Alternatively, consider Salerno or Sorrento, both of which serve as strategic transport hubs.

Step 3: Consider the Time of Year

Each season presents a trade-off

Visiting during high season (Easter through August) means fighting for space on the crowded buses. Conversely, visiting during the shoulder or off-peak seasons may lead to reduced ferry services. Whatever your choice, study transit times to avoid unpleasant surprises.

Step 4: Get Techy with It

Embrace technology to navigate public transport smoothly

Downloading the free Unico Campania app can drastically improve your public transport experience by providing real-time bus and train data. If purchasing tickets online isn’t an option, remember to visit local newsagents or tobacconists for bus tickets.

Step 5: Choose Your Transit Mode

Stay on land or take to the sea

Both SITA buses and ferries have their advantages. The SITA bus operates late at night, offering access to mountain villages as well as coastal charm. However, if your focus is primarily coastal travel, the ferry is often quicker and provides stunning scenic views of the coastline.

Final Thoughts

If I could do it all again, I might just master driving a Vespa—just kidding! My best advice, however, is to avoid cramming too many experiences into one day, as I did in Nerano. Take it slow, savor every moment, and enjoy the breathtaking views that make the Amalfi Coast so special.

With careful planning and a solid understanding of public transport, exploring this stunning region can be an unforgettable experience.
