Upcoming Amex Centurion Lounge at Newark Airport: Essential Details

Amex Expands Centurion Lounge to Newark

It’s official: Amex is expanding its swanky Centurion Lounge to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). Once unveiled, Amex will hold a lounge presence at all three major New York City airports, with Newark joining both New York LaGuardia and New York JFK. This expansion is a boon for premium Amex cardholders, particularly those with the Platinum and Centurion cards who frequently travel through this metropolitan area.

However, travelers should note that the Newark Terminal A space is not expected to debut until 2026. A spokesperson informed iBestTravel that while a 2021 proposal document had indicated an opening date of 2023, Amex only signed a lease for the Newark lounge recently. Consequently, the completion and opening of the lounge are still a few years away.

Lounge Features and Design

According to Audrey Hendley, President of American Express Travel, “The Centurion Lounge at Newark Liberty International Airport is a strong addition to our global network, giving eligible card members a taste of New Jersey’s history while delivering the premium experience and amenities that have become synonymous with the Centurion Lounges.”

Following the Centurion Lounge philosophy, as seen in the recently expanded Seattle location, the Newark venue will feature a strong regional design influence. It is set to include a jazz bar and piano lounge inspired by New Jersey’s rich twentieth-century jazz era. Furthermore, travelers can enjoy artifacts and antiques throughout the lounge that celebrate New Jersey’s vibrant culture. Additionally, there will be a 1,400-square-foot indoor terrace offering stunning views of the airport’s airfield and the Manhattan skyline across the Hudson River.

Growing Lounge Network

Currently, Amex has 15 full-fledged Centurion Lounges open worldwide, with additional locations confirmed at Atlanta International Airport (ATL), Washington National Airport (DCA), and now Newark. These exclusive pre-departure enclaves offer elevated food and drink options, including chef-curated meals and signature cocktails. Some Centurion Lounges even boast additional amenities such as spa services, wine tasting, and shower suites, all complimentary for eligible card members.

This announcement comes at a significant moment for Amex, marking ten years since the inception of the Centurion Lounge network, which began at Las Vegas International Airport (LAS) in 2013. With over 40 locations, including Escape Lounges—the Centurion Studio Partner—Amex is strengthening its airport presence. This development is particularly timely as competitor credit card companies like Chase and Capital One are also launching impressive lounge concepts, contributing to an increasingly competitive landscape for travelers seeking premium experiences.
