Anisakan Waterfall – What To Expect
The Dat Taw Gyaint Waterfall strikes with its breathtaking beauty. It emerged as one of the standout features of our Myanmar adventure!
Its unique cone shape reminded me of the Kuang Si Falls in Laos, albeit this waterfall is larger and more powerful.
The thunderous sound of the falls engulfs you, making you feel minuscule standing amidst the surrounding rocks. Indeed, this could very well be the largest waterfall in Myanmar.
The trek down the ravine features moderate difficulty, typically taking about 30-45 minutes each way. Although the descent is steep, the trail’s brevity makes it manageable overall.
Make sure to bring water or purchase some from nearby shops. If exhaustion sets in, locals frequently offer rides back to the top on their dirt bikes for a fee.
Scams
Upon arriving, you might encounter some women who offer to “assist” you down the trail in exchange for tips. Be aware that they often expect a substantial gratuity. A simple “no thanks” is usually sufficient as you continue on your way.
The fellow hikers encountered on the trail were generally friendly, which might be fortunate. Nevertheless, I have heard of frustrating experiences from others. Thus, a polite yet firm rejection is advisable to avoid any issues.
How To Get To Anisakan Falls
Anisakan Falls is situated near Pyin Oo Lwin city in northern Myanmar.
The nearest international airport is Mandalay (MDL), which numerous budget airlines service from Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur.
The trip from Mandalay city to the falls lasts approximately 1.5 hours, winding through picturesque mountain roads filled with breathtaking vistas. Renting a scooter or hiring a driver for the day are both viable options.
We were fortunate to find a reliable driver, Mr. Tun, who transported us for $30 USD (45,000 Kyats). You can reach him via WhatsApp at +959 785 849883 for a seamless trip. Alternatively, most hotels in Mandalay can assist with driver arrangements.
Opting for a tuk tuk will lead to a longer journey but typically incurs around a third of the cost.
Best Time To Visit
Myanmar’s tropical climate brings distinct dry and rainy seasons.
The optimal period for visiting the waterfall is around November, when the dry season begins and there is still plenty of water flow from the recent rains.
Visiting during other months remains possible, though the experience may not be quite as magnificent.
Where We Stayed
During our visit, we chose the 3-star Hotel Aurora in Mandalay city at a rate of $22 USD per night and were thoroughly impressed.
For this cost, we enjoyed a clean double room equipped with A/C, a private bathroom, and one of the best hotel buffet breakfasts we’ve ever encountered.
We dined exclusively at the hotel restaurant, conveniently located for reaching local temples and other attractions in Mandalay city.
