We peek into the airport routines and bizarre quirks of the world’s most well-travelled people.

There’s so much to love on screen in Netflix’s Bridgerton universe – the costumes, the music, the notoriously ardent romantic tension – but for travellers and Anglophiles, a top draw is the sumptuous imagery of English scenery. A “hands down favourite” filming location for actress Arsema Thomas, who plays the young Lady Danbury in the prequel spin-off Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, was the city of Bath. “The entire city is absolutely beautiful. It feels like you’re walking through a ready-made historic set because of how well they maintain everything,” Thomas says.
Her preferred place to steal away was the city’s pea-green, two-millennia-old waters. “The Roman Baths is this quiet, serene place, which feels quite magical,” says Thomas. Though the actress was born in the US and got a Master’s at Yale, she grew up across several African countries and later studied acting in Paris and London. Ahead of the release of Queen Charlotte, Thomas shared insights about her well-travelled life, including the spots she’d like to return to, the movies she chooses in flight, and the psychological games she plays at the airport gate.
A Place Worth Visiting: Benin
Benin is definitely on that list. I lived in Cotonou, the little capital right by the coastline. Benin is known for its music – it’s the home of Angélique Kidjo, one of the greatest African musicians currently performing – which gives the country its vibe. It has a fascinating history when it comes to voodoo, and the food is amazing. I love fish, and in almost every restaurant you visit, whatever fish you order, they go into the ocean and catch it for you. The atmosphere moves at an easy pace, even though it’s a bustling coastal city, making it a perfect destination for relaxation.
What’s in Her Carry-On?
My carry-on usually contains an assortment of snacks collected while walking through the airport. I typically pack something sweet – my absolute favourites are Haribo goldbears and Welch’s fruit snacks, reserved for America. I also keep something salty, usually lentil chips. Contrary to what you might expect, I often carry three novels, which I probably don’t even open during the flight.
Her 1-2-3 Flight Routine
If I find myself flying during the day, it usually means I’ve stayed up all night so that I could sleep through the flight, which isn’t the best strategy. I create a calming environment with a Spotify playlist that features Otis Redding, as it helps me sink into a meditative state. Additionally, I download podcasts that feel like cozy conversations among friends. Finally, I enjoy the in-flight movies, cycling through all these options multiple times as needed.
A Place She’d Like to Spend More Time In
I lived in southern India doing an Ayurvedic apprenticeship, and that’s a place I would love to explore again. It encapsulates so much of India in one spot. Southern Indian cuisine differs greatly from Northern offerings, which I often encounter in London. It’s the birthplace of Ayurvedic medicine, emphasizing a holistic approach to healing. My experience there was significant as I was exploring wellness options for my father who had ALS. The area is also home to stunning temples showcasing remarkable architecture, making it a beautiful destination I feel I did not fully experience.
Handling Airport Lines
I dislike it when people line up for the gate too early, as it makes me feel pressure to join them. Consequently, I often choose to remain seated until the very last moment, relishing that defiant stance. However, this strategy usually results in my carry-on being checked. It’s a bit like psychological warfare.
Cities She Could Visit Repeatedly
Nairobi and Port-au-Prince, Haiti, both offer amazing food and diverse cultures, endlessly inviting exploration. Nairobi is known for its vibrant markets, nightlife, and music scene. Music is paramount to my travel enjoyment; it’s crucial for immersing myself in each country.
The Most Stunning Hotels
One hotel that stands out is the Governor’s Camp Lodge in the Masai Mara, Kenya. It’s an incredible tented camp that immerses you in nature, allowing close interactions with wildlife, including zebras visiting your room. The architecture integrates harmoniously with the natural surroundings.
I also toured Ian Fleming’s estate in Jamaica, the filming site of Dr. No. It’s an exquisite property and a dream for any James Bond fan, resonating with nostalgia.
Beloved Hotel Amenities
I adore hotel rooms that come with slippers, as I always take them. Additionally, a complimentary breakfast with various options is a delightful way to start the day, providing a sense of luxury.
Future Travel Aspirations
I would love to travel throughout Brazil. My father once lived there, recounting tales of its enchanting nature. The historical connections to the Nigerian population brought there during the slave trade intrigue me. Brazilian music and coffee are also passions of mine, alongside the vibrant culture showcased during events like Carnival.
