The entirety of The Banshees of Inisherin takes place on a fictional Irish island, which inspired its title. However, Martin McDonagh’s new film, featuring an impressive cast of Ireland’s best and brightest talents, was filmed across a variety of breathtaking islands off the coast of the Emerald Isle. This dark comedy evolves into an interpersonal epic, exploring the petty and fickle nature of friendships against a backdrop that is biblically verdant and strikingly isolated. It’s no surprise that two friends, portrayed by Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, find themselves in conflict due to the sheer lack of distractions.

Although McDonagh has explored other settings in his recent work—most notably in In Bruges and Three Billboard Outside Ebbing, Missouri—it’s gratifying to see him return to Ireland. No, it’s primarily set on various parts of the Aran Islands, located just off the coast of Galway. Visitors take a boat to these islands, where they find themselves immersed in the local culture. One island, Inishmore, served as a significant filming location. Tildesley reflected on his first experience working with McDonagh and his adventures exploring these picturesque landscapes. The islands offer unspoiled coastal beauty, characterized by their vastness and lush greenery. The goal was to take advantage of several islands in the region rather than focusing on just one.

The Creation of Pádraic and Siobhán’s Home
Interestingly, the home of Pádraic and his sister Siobhán (played by Kerry Condon) was built from scratch on Inishmore. The team discovered a property next to a stonemason named Mickey, who contributed to the construction. McDonagh specified the desired view for the house, leading the crew to the perfect spot along the coastline. They utilized tarps for building and transported components via ferry. Local craftsmen, including Mickey, contributed genuine stone for the exterior, showcasing the meticulous attention to detail. It’s worth mentioning that if any stones were used from existing structures, they had to be numbered for accurate reconstruction.

Colm’s Unique Cottage
Once filming concluded in Inishmore, the crew traveled to County Mayo and Achill Island. They discovered an old whaling cottage situated by the water, requiring minimal modifications such as thatching the roof and adding a new window. Much of the renovation utilized salvaged materials, creating authentic charm. The vibrant colors indoors include a black ceiling, bright yellow walls, and a distinct red floor, constructed from old oilskin sailcloth. This blend reflects Colm’s eclectic personality.

The significance of the bar and various paths in the film establishes a social atmosphere, where townsfolk frequently encounter one another. The crew engaged local quarry workers to help create roads that enhance the film’s setting. The resulting landscape appears natural, contributing to the film’s authenticity. The village prominently features Mrs. O’Riordan’s shop and a cozy bar, providing warmth and excitement to the locals during the project.
