Become a Barefoot Bookseller in the Maldives

If nothing makes you happier than finding the perfect holiday read, then a dream job awaits in the Maldives as the newest “Barefoot Bookseller.”

Ultimate Library, along with the luxury five-star Soneva Fushi resort, created the pop-up bookshop in the Maldives in 2018. Each year since, they have sought someone eager to leave it all behind and manage the shop—capturing the attention of book and travel enthusiasts worldwide. The most recent bookseller, Chrissy Ryan, joined last November and spent her days writing blog posts, hosting creative writing classes, curating libraries, swimming, snorkeling, reading on the beach, and doing yoga.

Writing on the Barefoot Bookseller blog, Chrissy reflected, “I’ve moved 6000 miles across the planet, left my friends and family behind me, and found a whole new community on a small island in the middle of the Indian Ocean. I’ve tested my boundaries and rediscovered my sense of self.” She expressed gratitude for her time as the Barefoot Bookseller, stating she’s had the privilege of sharing her love of literature with people from all around the globe, inspiring them to appreciate reading as well.

With the shop set to open its doors again in mid-October, another new staff member is required to embrace the task of barefoot bookselling on the beautiful Baa Atoll for six months. The selected bookseller will provide literary experiences for resort guests, such as writers’ workshops and personalized reading consultations. Subsequently, the successful applicant will have ample opportunity to enjoy island life, balancing their time between the library, beach, and jungle.

The successful applicant will receive product training for one month with the Ultimate Library team before flying to the Maldives for their six-month placement. The ideal candidate will have a deep passion for books and be able to engage with guests of all ages. Consequently, they must possess excellent written and verbal English skills and will be responsible for documenting their experiences through a blog. They will also need the capability to facilitate workshops and events for guests.

The Maldives is currently welcoming international tourists with minimal requirements for travelers amidst the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. This makes it a perfect escape for those wanting to combine work with paradise.
