Volkswagen ID Buggy Cancellation Revealed
The excitement surrounding the Volkswagen ID Buggy, an electric-powered dune buggy showcased at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, was palpable. Initially, it seemed destined for production, as Volkswagen had indicated strong intentions to move forward. Given its unique design and the legacy of successful models like the New Beetle and the GTI, the Buggy appeared to fit perfectly within Volkswagen’s innovative portfolio.
The Disappointment of Cancellation
However, recent information has dampened expectations. According to an interview with Volkswagen CEO Ralf Brandstätter conducted by Autocar, the ID Buggy is no longer on the table for production.
“No, we won’t do this car,” Brandstätter disclosed. “We had a partner, but in the end, it didn’t work out.” The believed partner was the German firm e.GO, which collaborated with Volkswagen to design niche automobiles based on its MEB electric platform—this platform will also support popular models like the upcoming ID.4.
Moreover, a March 2019 press release from e.GO hinted at the potential for the ID Buggy but did not confirm any official partnership for its production. Unfortunately, e.GO faced financial difficulties, filing for bankruptcy protection in April 2020, which halted all manufacturing and development activities by mid-July of the same year.
Community Sentiment and Future Prospects
This cancellation may seem trivial in the larger landscape of electric vehicles, yet anticipation was high. The ID Buggy concept had garnered enthusiasm, particularly after positive reactions from events like the Pebble Beach show where test drives showcased its capabilities.
In a similar vein, there may also be concerns surrounding another concept called the Ruggdzz. This go-anywhere SUV, resembling the Land Rover Discovery, is currently shelved. Brandstätter stated, “We’ve put it in the drawer. That is not to say it won’t be built, but I don’t think you’ll see it soon. We have more important projects on the run.”
Consequently, while the ID Buggy represents a missed opportunity for electric vehicle enthusiasts, it highlights Volkswagen’s ongoing commitment to prioritize significant vehicle projects within its electric lineup. This strategic decision could galvanize the company’s endeavors to innovate and lead within the rapidly evolving electric vehicle market.
