Stylish Outfit Ideas for a Beach Wedding

From ruffled dresses to linen suits

29 May 2024

Dressing for a wedding can be challenging at the best of times – unless you’re in the bridal party, in which case it’s whatever outfit the couple inflicts upon you. A good rule of thumb is colourful (a special circle of hell is reserved for guests who wear white) and mid-length if you’re going down the dress route, with sensible yet smart shoes that can get you from ceremony to dance floor. A destination wedding, particularly a beach wedding, changes the game. Wardrobes need to straddle the worlds of both formal and holiday; smart looks that still carry an off-duty flair. From ruffled dresses to chic linen suits, we’ve rounded up the best pieces to wear to a destination wedding this summer.

The printed dress

A beach wedding is still a formal occasion, but the setting calls for a more relaxed look. Swap out stiff fabrics for ruffles; shift dresses for flowing styles; colour block for colour-full. Print-clash dresses are a fun-filled choice for a beach wedding or go for a muted gold tone and nude accessories if you want to keep things on the chicer side.

The flat sandal

A sandy setting is no time to give up on glamour. Don’t let your outfit down with some scruffy flip flops; instead, invest in some smart sandals, flat yet padded for uneven terrain. Smart doesn’t mean boring – there are lots of colourful styles that fit the comfort brief (read: comfy, flat sole) but will give your look the finishing touch. If the colour is too much, look for metallic styles that keep the balance between fancy and formal.

The loafer

I don’t envy anyone who didn’t consider their footwear choices before turning up to a beach wedding. Traditional brogues (especially ones that need to be worn with socks) will feel and look ridiculous in the sand, but there is also no greater crime than wearing open-toe sandals with a formal look. The loafer is the perfect option. Part boat shoe with its single-cut sole, and designed to be worn sock-free, this is a great all-rounder for beach, ceremony, party, and beyond. We love a sleek suede option, but if there’s any chance of contact with water, stick to the leather.

The linen look

If you don’t know where to make a start when looking for a dress to wear to a wedding, try starting with a fabric; linen is a great option to wear in warmer climes no matter the occasion, and there are lots of smart mix and match styles as well as colour block dresses and cool shirts – especially handy for a long weekend as you can pair them with other pieces.

The pouch bag

Accessories can be tricky for any destination wedding, especially bags; you’ll need something big enough for all of your essentials, without looking cumbersome. We recommend a pouch style bag; something you can wear on your shoulder but in a non-structured shape, which keeps things relaxed.

The sunglasses

Don’t leave home without these practical accessories – for any daytime event, a pair of sunglasses is a must. Tortoiseshell is always a good option – they go with everything, from colourful to black to muted, so they will see you through any event or occasion.

The maxi dress

Kaftans might have a bit of a bad reputation – a hangover from the early noughties Rachel Zoe era – so if anyone asks, this is a ‘maxi dress’. Channel Liz Taylor with bold prints or fringing. A chic option is best paired with understated accessories for a more stripped-back take on the trend. A one-shoulder version is better for the evening.

The suit

A great starting point is a good suit. A looser style is better for warmer climes or look for options in breathable fabrics such as linen. Pale colours work really well for sunshine settings, but that doesn’t mean strictly cream; pale pinks and blues keep things looking more fashion-forward. Single-breasted is better for more informal occasions.

The witty raffia bag

The great thing about a beach wedding is that it doesn’t take itself too seriously. It’s hard to be too polished with the smell of sea salt and coconut on the breeze. For a daytime ceremony, why not pack a beach-ready raffia bag but add in some fun with these styles: shells, flowers, and even fish make for witty arm accessories.

The statement earrings

The finishing touch to any look is some statement jewellery. Leave delicate or metal pieces at home and opt for fun statement earrings in lightweight, natural fabrics. Your lobes will thank us.

The hat

For a long ceremony under the sun, or for anyone follically challenged, a good sun hat is a must. Look for a classic style in neutral colours and natural fabrics. Brims should be slightly wider to protect under midday rays.

The printed shirt

For a more relaxed occasion, and with expressed approval from the couple, a printed shirt is a clever way to blend formalwear with beachwear. Don’t go full Hawaiian shirt or anything too ostentatious, but opt for subtle prints and patterns and pair them with trousers or shorts in a similar colourway to remain smart.

The Bermuda shorts

If the thought of wearing a full suit seems overkill or just too clammy, why not consider Bermuda shorts? This shorts style was designed for the British military to maintain their uniform codes in tropical climes. Longer lines look more formal and more forgiving than shorter, tighter styles and work for a formal setting.
