A Budget-Friendly Two-Day Getaway in Berlin

In this article, we explore how to maximize your budget on a midweek trip to Berlin.

Pre-Trip Spending

My recent visit to Berlin was a delightful two-day getaway. Although I lived in Berlin for four years, there’s always something new to explore, from its rich history to contemporary culture. The challenge was to make the most of our time without overspending.

Day 1: Exploring Berlin

Arrival and Lunch

Airport Transfer: We arrived at Berlin’s BER airport around 9 am with a direct taxi transfer to our hotel, taking approximately 35 minutes.

Lunch: We walked to Gendarmenmarkt for lunch at a Bavarian restaurant called Erdinger am Gendarmenmarkt. I chose the filling Käsespätzle (cheesy egg noodles) along with sparkling apple juice for a total of €18.90.

Transport

We purchased a 24-hour ticket for the AB zone for €9.50 each, allowing unlimited travel on public transport throughout the center of Berlin.

Activities

After lunch, we explored the Topographie des Terrors, a powerful museum documenting the Nazi terror institutions. The audio tour, available via QR code, was informative and engaging. We then ventured to the East Side Gallery to admire the vibrant murals on a remaining section of the Berlin Wall.

Snack: We visited Markthalle Neun in Kreuzberg, a historical market hall with local produce and artisan vendors. At a French wine bar, we enjoyed glass of wine for €6.

Evening Activities

We decided to head to Alexanderplatz to take in the panoramic views from the Fernsehturm (TV Tower) at the cost of €25.50 each. The breathtaking city lights were well worth the expense.

Dinner: We visited the Christmas Market at Bebelplatz, sampling delicious Neuburger Rahmbrot at €4.50 each. A warming Glühwein capped off our night at €4 each.
