However, campfires and dogs are not allowed here, ensuring a peaceful camping experience. Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park

Camping in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park is extremely limited — only two campsites are available. However, the park is breathtakingly stunning (think granite cliffs, waterfalls, and panoramic ocean views), making it worthy of consideration.

The two campsites are quite simple, featuring just a fire ring, a picnic table, and access to pit toilets. Located right off Highway 1, you must park and carry your camping gear since cars and dogs are not permitted. To secure one of these coveted spots, it is advisable to plan far in advance as reservations usually fill up six months prior.

Kirk Creek Campground

Located within the expansive Los Padres National Forest, Kirk Creek Campground is one of those hidden Big Sur gems known for its breathtaking views, perched on a 100-foot high bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. There are 40 tent and RV sites, and most are bookable online (though two campsites operate on a first-come, first-served basis). Kirk Creek is a bit remote, so be sure to fill up your water jugs before arriving. The campground is equipped with vault toilets, picnic tables, fire rings, and firewood available for purchase. Big Sur Campground & Cabins

This family-oriented campground enforces strict quiet hours starting at 10 p.m. and features a playground, camp store, and both tent and RV camping sites at the base of towering redwoods. Tent sites have access to a bathhouse with hot showers, while RV spots offer water, electricity, and access to a dump station. For an upscale camping experience in Big Sur, consider reserving a cabin, many of which feature fully equipped kitchens, fireplaces, and private bathrooms.

Plaskett Creek Campground

Located within Los Padres National Forest, Plaskett Creek Campground offers 44 tent and RV sites just a short walk from Sand Dollar Beach and the Willet hiking trail. Each site is equipped with picnic tables, parking, and access to toilets and water. If you require a last-minute campsite, two sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis, but please note there are no guarantees. Fernwood Resort

Riverside Campground & Cabins

The towering redwoods at Riverside Campground & Cabins provide both shade and a generous dose of nature, while also offering various creature comforts. Each of the 34 campsites includes a picnic table and a fire pit, with nearby hot showers, laundry, and clean bathrooms. RV campers will find electric and water hookups available (though there are no sewer or dump stations). This dog-friendly campground also features opportunities for swimming, tubing, and catch-and-release fishing on the Big Sur River.
