Discover the Best Islands in the Koh Samui Archipelago

The Koh Samui Archipelago, located in the Gulf of Thailand, includes the ever-popular island of Koh Samui, the diving-and-partying haven of Koh Tao, and Koh Pha Ngan, an island favored by backpackers. Geographically, these islands are part of the Chumphon Archipelago, but they are commonly referred to by the name of the largest island, Koh Samui.

These three islands, beloved by tourists, are situated in Surat Thani Province and include Mu Ko Ang Thong, a marine national park that encompasses 42 islands. Visitors can experience all three islands, each offering distinct vibes that cater to different types of travelers. Ferries operate between the islands and the mainland, turning island-hopping into a thrilling reality.

If you have a few days to spare for exploration under the sun, journey south from Bangkok to the stunning beaches and islands within the Koh Samui Archipelago. For those with limited time, consider visiting some of the closest beaches to the capital.

Koh Samui

Koh Samui is Thailand’s second most popular vacation island, following Phuket, and is almost as developed. Unlike the other islands in the Koh Samui Archipelago, Koh Samui has its own airport, which increases its accessibility.

This sizeable island also boasts a diverse range of accommodations suitable for all budgets, along with a plethora of bars and restaurants, including upscale options managed by renowned chefs. Koh Samui tends to attract higher-budget travelers, honeymooners, and families seeking a vacation atmosphere. Chaweng Beach, a hotspot for nightlife, can get lively; fortunately, Koh Samui’s ample size allows for quiet escapes as well.

While the beaches may not match the beauty of those on the Andaman Coast, they offer warm waters, soft sands, and plenty of palm trees, creating an inviting tropical atmosphere. The island’s interior predominantly features mountainous and undisturbed jungle landscapes.

You can fly directly into Koh Samui (airport code: USM), or opt for a cost-effective bus or flight to Surat Thani (airport code: URT), followed by a 90-minute ferry ride to the island.

Ko Pha Ngan

This infamous party island offers more than just indulgence at Haad Rin Beach and vibrant all-night dance parties. Koh Pha Ngan stretches across a sizable area, featuring a variety of beautiful beaches and idyllic bays waiting to be explored.

Additionally, Koh Pha Ngan attracts a younger, adventurous backpacking crowd, alongside long-term travelers and digital nomads eager to discover holistic communities and affordable living arrangements. One notable destination is The Sanctuary, a health retreat accessible by boat, nestled in a bay near the party haven of Haad Rin.

While the southern segment of Koh Pha Ngan is celebrated for its active nightlife, the island also boasts serene beaches with charming sea-view bungalows and luxurious boutique resorts. The northern areas cater to travelers seeking a tranquil getaway.

During quieter periods, Haad Rin’s beach offers an excellent retreat. Many travelers opt to visit nearby Koh Tao, particularly after the bustling Full Moon Party weeks.

Although there’s currently no airport on Koh Pha Ngan, a boat can conveniently transport you from the mainland or Koh Samui.

Koh Tao

Koh Tao was once primarily a haven for divers and backpackers, but this island is rapidly gaining popularity among vacationers. It is renowned as one of the top destinations globally for scuba certification, offering affordable courses as dive shops proliferate alongside restaurants and bars.

The island, which is smaller and less developed than its neighboring islands, has transitioned from its formerly “sleepy” reputation. By night, a lively pub scene attracts visitors from Koh Pha Ngan after the Full Moon Parties, bringing excitement with bucket drinks, fire shows, and energetic pubs.

Koh Tao lies north of Koh Pha Ngan. Despite its size, it provides ample accommodations and dining options without sacrificing comfort.

To reach Koh Tao, take a boat from either Chumphon or Surat Thani on the mainland, making it an accessible destination for travelers.

Ang Thong National Marine Park

The Koh Samui Archipelago also includes Ang Thong Marine National Park, a pristine area in Thailand dedicated to conserving nature. This marine park encompasses 42 distinct islands across an expanse of 49 square miles. Most of these islands are quite small and are ideally visited on day tours.

Snorkeling in the park is exceptional, showcasing vibrant shallow reefs, while kayaking around the islands may lead you to secluded beaches just out of view.

Koh Wua Talap serves as the marine park’s headquarters and tourist center. If you can forgo electricity after 11 p.m., you might reserve one of the limited bungalows available on the island, affording you stunning morning vistas. Camping opportunities also exist, but note that Wi-Fi is unavailable!

To fully appreciate Ang Thong Marine National Park, consider arranging a day trip from any of the islands. Koh Samui typically serves as the main base, although you can also hire boats from Koh Pha Ngan and Koh Tao. Many travel agents and hotel staff will assist in securing tickets for your adventure.
