FOR ONE-OFF HOMEWARE

Glassblower Maj-Britt Zelmer Olsen and artist Sarah Oakman’s combined gallery and studio Matter – House of Craft is set in an old shipyard facing the brutalist silos of Nexø harbour. Their handmade pieces – plinths drip-painted in Yves Klein blue, naturalistic vases, unfinished ashtrays, and cracked-clay bowls – are displayed like precious objects in a minimal, exhibition-like space. The duo works independently, but they share a synergy in their eye for raw materials and contemporary design. Their tableware can also be seen at three Michelin-starred restaurants Geranium in Copenhagen and Hélène Darroze at The Connaught in London. Nordre Strandvej 2, Nexø

FOR ORGANIC PRODUCTS

At the end of a long dirt road outside the town of Aarsdale is an organic sea-buckthorn plantation and farm shop Høstet (the name means ‘harvested’). For the past 11 years, owners Camilla and Mads Meisner have meticulously explored the uses and health benefits of this underappreciated orange berry. Today, they supply nearby restaurants and run a lab mixing their own concoctions. The adjoining store sells everything from marmalade to skincare products, as well as collaborations and commissions from other local businesses. Stay for the sea-buckthorn-themed Drinks in the Country event on Friday evenings during the summer. høstet.dk

FOR AVANT-GARDE FASHION

Bornholm is home to arguably two of the most directional multi-brand emporia in Denmark, owned by Flemming Holmgaard and managed with fellow fashion savant Jasper Hansen. Gutemensch in Rønne is the more approachable of the two, offering a concise edit of sought-after Scandi brands such as Ganni, Acne Studios, and athleisure go-to 7Days Active. True to the team’s boundary-pushing ambitions, there are also niche names including the German label Anntian, famous for its hand-printed dresses, and limited-edition shirts illustrated by local artists. Sibling boutique Achtung, distinguished by its neon-green exterior, carries off-beat garb from Viktor & Rolf and Danish Recycle Dead Stock, which uses leftover fabrics for its sustainable creations. In a fittingly DIY process, the pair also manufacture and print their own, ever-evolving Ich Bin Ein Bornholmer line. Store Torvegade 10, Rønne. achtungstore.com

FOR CRAFT BREWS

From beer and cider to vodka and gin, Bornholm is booming with micro-distilleries making high-quality, small-batch spirits. Nord Snaps by Rie Uldahl in eastern Svaneke is one of them, and owner Rie puts a sophisticated spin on the traditionally low-brow Danish snaps by using foraged ingredients such as blackberry and beech leaves. A few doors down is a wine shop and bar-restaurant Vinøs, which is now in its third year and boasts the most extensive collection of natural wines on the island. The store is packed with bottles from estates across Europe, including owner Martin Barslund’s own natural red, made from grapes cultivated in the neighbouring fields. nordsnaps.com, vinoest.dk
