Discover the Best Swimming Locations in London to Beat the Heat

London may be famously cold and rainy, but summer temperatures are soaring in the capital, making outdoor swimming an appealing escape for locals.

In time for the latest summer heatwave in London, a new open-water swimming venue has opened this week to help city dwellers cool down.

Here’s a look at some of the best spots to enjoy a refreshing swim in the city.

Take a dip among the high rises of Canary Wharf

Open: 7am-4pm (times vary); members swim £8

Located in the heart of London’s Docklands, swimmers are surrounded by high-rise office buildings and apartments. This new site has been set up by the NOWCA group, which operates over 40 open-water swimming spots including lakes and rivers in the UK. The newest venue at Canary Wharf features a 250m or 600m swimming loop, along with mixed-gender changing rooms and toilet facilities. However, please note that there’s nowhere secure to leave your belongings, so make sure to avoid bringing valuables. A similar setup is not far away at Royal Victoria Docks, conveniently located near direct transport routes.

As one of London’s most storied swimming locations, Hampstead Heath features three beautiful ponds (despite their name, these are deep spring-fed waterholes). The women-only Kenwood Ladies’ Pond offers a secluded swimming spot shaded by trees and gardens, making it a perfect post-swim picnic location. Entry operates on a first-come basis, but arriving early is recommended on hot summer days. Close by, the Highgate Men’s Pond provides facilities like cold showers and changing rooms, ensuring a comfortable experience. The west side of Hampstead Heath has the Mixed Pond, the most accessible for public transport.
