To describe Big Zuu as larger-than-life doesn’t really conjure the sheer personality of the man. Enthusiastic, jovial, and incredibly funny, the rapper, grime MC, and presenter first burst onto our screens with Big Zuu’s Big Eats, and his star quickly rose as one of the country’s favorite foodie personalities. Born in West London to a Sierra Leonean mother and Lebanese father, Big Zuu was born Zuhair Hassan. An unwavering love of music, food, and conviviality mixed with his say-it-as-he-sees-it manner and megawatt smile are instantly recognizable and make for heart-warming, hilarious television.
His latest show, 12 Dishes in 12 Hours, follows Zuu covering cities across Europe, including Valencia, Bologna, and Amsterdam, eating 12 dishes in 12 hours. He explores each place with a different celebrity friend. The first episode kicks off with him in Bologna alongside close friend and Marvel star Will Poulter, trying local delicacies such as Certasino (a classic Bolognian Christmas cake) and ice cream with balsamic. “You’ve got to try it! It’s actually crazy good,” Zuu enthuses, and, of course, ragu.
The idea for Zuu’s latest show is, as he describes it, a “continuation of the big, vibrant food” we saw in Big Zuu’s Big Eats. “We wanted to give good reasons why we’re going to places,” he explains, “showing people exactly what to eat and where. It was great fun to make, but not easy, because trying 12 different dishes in 12 hours wasn’t simple; it was a serious challenge.” He admits that for him, traveling is, first and foremost, about the food. “There are people who fly without thinking about food,” he tells me, but “those people are quite different from me!”
When he wants to “get away from London without flying away,” it’s Manchester that pulls at his heartstrings, not to mention his appetite. “Mani (as he calls it) is home to many of my friends and a city I have visited more times than I can recall. It’s a big vibe, and if you’ve ever had a night out in Mani, you’ll understand. It’s great fun, and the people are very kind and genuine. There’s a huge warmth to Manchester, and the people really welcome you and interact with you.”
San Carlo
“San Carlo is an Italian restaurant where I always start with dinner before a night out with friends. It’s famous for its size and extravagance, but it’s affordable. You can dine with ten friends without breaking the bank. The quality is excellent, and the vibe is uplifting, always bustling with energy.”
Who comes here?
“Everyone in Manchester heads to San Carlo. It’s well-known for both its food and energetic atmosphere.”
Best table in the restaurant
“San Carlo is huge, with a main dining area and a quiet corner. For a more low-key experience, try to get a table in the quieter section. However, if you want to be amidst the buzz, the main dining room is the place to be.”
Best time to come
“It’s ideal for dinner before heading out in Mani with friends.”
Dish to order
“They have a half-and-half pizza with garlic cheese on one side and tomato on the other. It’s a perfect starter. I also love their risotto and fresh pasta, along with arancini. I should be in their advertisement; I love it so much.”
The Drop Bar Cafe
“Most places in Manchester are in the city center, but this spot is near Old Trafford, a bit off the beaten path. If I have a couple of hours to myself, I always head here, especially on Sundays. This Caribbean bar-café serves massive portions that are worth every penny.”
Who comes here?
“You’ve got to know about this place to go; it’s mostly locals and Manchester residents.”
Best table in the restaurant
“If it’s not too cold, grab a table on the terrace; it’s delightful.”
Best time to come
“I always go for lunch on Sundays.”
Dish to order
“They serve an incredible Caribbean Sunday roast with lamb, chicken, coconut rice with peas, and fried plantain, along with an epic jerk chicken.”
Jimmy’s Killer Prawns
“Despite the daring name, it’s all about the prawns here, and they truly live up to it. They also offer steak but specialize in seafood that’s meant to be enjoyed messily — it’s finger-licking good. This place also provides great value for money.”
Who comes here?
“Everyone. Many prefer the convenience of delivery, but it’s a Manchester institution.”
Best table in the restaurant
“To be honest, I’ve never eaten in the restaurant itself; I always opt for takeout or delivery.”
Best time to come
“Any time is a good time for Jimmy’s.”
Dish to Order
“The prawn combo is a must-try, served in a large container with spicy rice and chips. You can choose between original, spicy, or extra spicy prawns.”
Dishoom
“I know these restaurants are widespread, but the Manchester location has its own charm. It’s spacious and easier to access than the London one, which is known for long waits. The decor is stunning, situated within a beautiful building.”
Who comes here?
“Anyone in Manchester seeking a quality curry or who simply loves Dishoom.”
Best table in the restaurant
“It’s less hectic than other spots, allowing for a great vibe. There are sectioned-off areas for those wanting a bit more privacy.”
Best time to come
“I usually go for dinner before heading out, but I’ve never tried breakfast there. They say it’s amazing, so I need to give it a go.”
Dish to order
“The daal with naan bread is my favorite, and they offer fantastic vegetarian options as well.”
Chai Latte Café
“This lively café is a go-to for breakfast. While it may not be the best, it’s perfect for post-night-out cravings when you’re rushing to check out of your Airbnb and need fuel for the journey home.”
Who comes here?
“Students, locals, and anyone in dire need of a hearty meal after a night out.”
Best table in the restaurant
“Try to snag any available table, as it can get crowded, especially on Sunday mornings.”
Best time to come
“Always go for breakfast.”
Dish to order
“You can customize your breakfast however you like, and it’s best complemented by a large apple juice. For a classic English experience, Chai Latte is the spot, and I’ve been going there for years.”
Special Mention: Yours
“I want to highlight a restaurant called Yours. It transitions to a vibrant bar in the evenings. If you’re familiar with Manchester, this is the place to be. You might spot footballers and celebrities, but it maintains a local vibe that’s open to everyone.”
