First-Time Safari Experience in Zambia: A Black American’s Transformative Journey

An Incredible Safari Experience in Zambia

On a safari through Zambia, I discovered not only incredible wildlife and landscapes but passionate individuals creating change. As a Black American, I’ve always been fascinated by the continent of Africa. I sometimes contemplate which country my ancestors came from while studying a map of this vast land. Perhaps this fascination is why my interest leaned more towards the people rather than the animals at first. However, after two years of pandemic confinement, the outdoors beckoned like never before.

Being out in nature promised an experience antithetical to my urban American existence. I had a renewed desire to explore and see it all. Yet, I wasn’t sure what to expect from Zambia. The media often focuses on the luxurious resorts in Kenya and South Africa, but I appreciate comfort without the fussiness.

Wildlife Encounters

Fortunately for me, my trip was planned by Cherri Briggs, the founder of the safari operator Explore, Inc., who choreographed an unforgettable adventure. My first stop was with the Bushcamp Company, known for striking the perfect balance between relaxed luxury and genuine game tourism.

Upon arrival at Mfuwe, one of the properties of the Bushcamp Company, I was thrilled to be welcomed by a pair of elephants affectionately called “ellies.” Observing these magnificent creatures up close set the stage for an extraordinary safari adventure. Throughout my stay, I frequently spotted elephants along with other wildlife which made every encounter feel like a miracle.

Conservation Initiatives

The Bushcamp Company operates three lodges and six camps, all focused on sustainability. During my time at Mfuwe, I met my wildlife expedition team, including Fannuel Banda, the lead guide, and Gwen Mukumbi, a wildlife tracker. They are deeply dedicated to conservation and aspire to make a positive impact on their environment.

Throughout the trip, I learned about the human-wildlife conflict and how the Bushcamp Company aims to ameliorate it. They have initiated programs to grow food locally, which contributes to sustainability while supporting the community.

Culinary Delights

In terms of gastronomy, I relished an exquisite dinner at KuKaya, the newest lodge in the Bushcamp family. The Indian feast prepared for me included flavorful curries and local wines, enriching the overall experience.

Where to Stay

The Bushcamp Company: Offers six camps and three luxurious yet understated lodges in South Luangwa National Park.
