BMW 4-Series: The Truth Behind Discontinuation Rumors

The Future of the BMW 4-Series: What Lies Ahead

As one of the newest nameplates in BMW’s lineup, the 4-Series is gaining positive responses from buyers. Despite the polarizing front grille, the 2025 BMW 430i coupe boasts a powerful six-cylinder engine and impressive driving dynamics. It has also shown to look spectacular as a race car, raising questions about BMW’s true design intentions.

Recent Updates on Production Plans

Update, April 22: Recently, we learned from BMW North America Head of Product Communications Tom Plucinsky that there are rumors regarding the potential discontinuation of the ICE 4-Series due to the emergence of new EV models: “BMW believes in technology openness. We’re still investing in ICE engines and BEVs while exploring hydrogen power as a viable alternative for long-distance driving.” This signals that BMW is actively investing across multiple technologies rather than eliminating options.

Consequently, the ICE BMW 4-Series seems to have a secure future for now. While possibilities for change exist, it appears that BMW is not ready to abandon the 430i at this moment.

The 4-Series: Is It Facing Discontinuation?

Despite its success, some speculate that BMW may eventually discontinue the 4 Series. According to a report from BMW Blog (via Car Expert), there are no plans for a next-generation 4-Series. Given that the model has seen strong sales, this raises questions about BMW’s strategy.

It could be influenced by BMW’s Vision Neue Klasse concepts, which are expected to reach production soon. The electric i4 is likely to take over the slot previously occupied by models like the 430i, resulting in no new ICE coupe for the coming generation. Nevertheless, updated versions of the 2-Series and 4-Series may still exist for several more years.

Transitioning to Electric Vehicles

As automakers prioritize research and development to transition to electric vehicles and improve infrastructure, it seems unlikely that BMW would entirely abandon a well-selling ICE coupe just yet. The timeline for this change remains unclear.

It’s uncommon for an automaker to walk away from a financially successful model, unless external pressures dictate such a decision. For now, the outlook for the BMW 4-Series appears promising, and we anticipate more information about the BMW Vision Neue Klasse and its future electric replacements to surface soon. As we look ahead, we remain optimistic about the potential for new models, including an electric i4 coupe, and perhaps even a convertible version in the future.
