Unveiling BMW’s Canceled Next-Gen Supercar: The i8 Successor

BMW I16: The Anticipated Successor to the i8

Recently, BMW’s Head of Design, Domagoj Dukec, shared some striking photos and drawings of a potential BMW i8 successor that have drawn attention. This vehicle, referred to as the I16, showcases a blend of inspired design and innovative features.

Initially, the car’s interior and exterior design were ready for debut; however, the unforeseen pandemic caused plans to be stalled, ultimately leading to the car being shelved. Consequently, the I16 might have missed its prime opportunity to enter the market, which is unfortunate due to the compelling and unique aesthetic it offers. The renderings of the I16 present a shapely, refined flagship coupe that stands out significantly from its predecessor, showcasing evolution rather than mere variation.

One notable aspect of the I16’s design is its front fascia, which, while echoing features from the i8, successfully establishes its own identity. The original i8 included blue accents to signify its innovative hybrid powertrain; in contrast, the I16’s design employs bold orange highlights, reflecting the mainstream acceptance of hybrid technology and emphasizing a sporty appeal.

BMW I16 in a different angle

The rear of the I16 echoes the vision of the iX SUV with sleek taillights, while the louver-like rear deck conveys a modern and aerodynamically optimized shape. Importantly, elements like the placement of the double roundels pay homage to BMW’s storied legacy, linking back to its iconic models.

BMW I16 Design Showcase

In summary, the I16 represents what could have been a standout halo car for BMW. While the brand seems to have shifted towards the polarizing BMW XM, enthusiasts are left to ponder if the decision was indeed the right one. The I16 serves as a testament to BMW’s ability to innovate and inspire, illustrating the potential futures of automotive design.
