The Most Powerful M Car Ever: BMW EV M Coupe
We now know what the most powerful M car in the history of BMW will look like… kind of. The mysterious electric coupe was caught testing recently, and while the spy images are clear enough to give us more than a good idea of the car’s silhouette, it was wearing a camo wrap that hid the more subtle details. Even so, there is still plenty for our eyes to pore over.
Highlights of the BMW EV M Coupe
If you need a refresher, in June Frank van Meel, CEO of BMW’s M division, was asked what the automaker’s first BEV performance vehicle will offer. His response was surprisingly revealing. He claimed that it will “beat everything you have ever seen,” which is a mighty big claim. Jokes aside, it’s been hinted that in its final form, this car will have the equivalent of over 1,300 horsepower, which will come from four electric motors. The quad-motor layout could theoretically allow this coupe to perform exceptionally in handling and power distribution. However, that’s yet to be confirmed. Let’s talk about what we can actually see in these spy shots.
The Return of the BMW M1?
As soon as these images surfaced, some enthusiasts began comparing the coupe’s silhouette to the legendary BMW M1 coupe, a wedgy Giugiaro design from the late 1970s. It might sound preposterous, but when you actually look at this new M Coupe alongside the classic M1, there are remarkably similar traits. Both coupes share a wedge-like shape with a high tail line and a low front fascia that comes to a thin edge. Additionally, they both feature understated “kidney” grilles.
Moreover, both models showcase BMW’s commitment to cutting-edge design and technology. That said, there are notable differences as well. The BMW EV M coupe won’t replicate the analog driving feel of the M1, nor will it produce the iconic sound of its M88 inline-six. However, the EV coupe is expected to outperform the M1 in various performance metrics.
Devil in the Details
The BMW EV M coupe has several distinctive features that stand out even with the camouflage. First, it showcases a LED taillight strip across the entire rear width, designed to have a continuous look while actually being split into three separate pieces.
The coupe also appears to have a higher stance than a typical performance car, suggesting more ground clearance compared to the M1. Rather than nostalgic mesh-style wheels, the BMW EV M coupe sports staggered five-spoke wheels that complement the wedge motif.
If you closely examine the images, you can catch a glimpse of the interior, which looks to feature mostly white upholstery corresponding to what has been presented in the Neue Klasse sedan concept. A flat-bottom steering wheel appears to be included, although it is somewhat difficult to discern.
Excitement on the Horizon
While we wish for more images, only a handful are currently available. The good news is that since BMW is conducting dynamic testing, the reveal of this remarkable coupe is likely not too far off, possibly as a concept or even a production-ready vehicle. Rest assured we’re going to keep our eyes peeled for more information. Stay tuned!
