- BMW announced that it will build a limited run of the Skytop concept shown earlier this year.
- The Skytop reaches production unchanged and harnesses 617 horsepower from a twin-turbo V-8.
- BMW is only building 50 examples, and they all have already been reserved.
Introduction to the Skytop Concept
Earlier this year at the Villa d’Este Concorso d’Eleganza, BMW revealed the Skytop, a striking two-seater based on the M8 Competition convertible. The car looked ready for production, suggesting that limited quantities could be made available, as BMW even let Car and Driver take a quick spin. Now, BMW has confirmed that the Skytop will reach production, with a short run of just 50 units planned.
Design Highlights
The concept’s design remains virtually unchanged for the production model. The pointy front end is accentuated by thin LED headlights, while sharp creases streak along the body. Moreover, the targa-style roof is supported by a leather-wrapped rollover bar, and the two roof panels, also trimmed in leather, can be conveniently removed by hand and stored in the luggage compartment.
Exterior Features
The hand-painted Floating Sundown Silver color from the concept also carries over to the production version, and it seems it will be the sole hue offered for this limited-run vehicle. The Skytop sets itself apart with a notable spine that runs down the hood, reappearing on the rear deck lid as a distinct aluminum bar. Instead of traditional door handles, the doors are opened via small winglets that extend upward from the silver window trim.
Interior Specifications
Meanwhile, the interior is adorned with luxurious brown leather. The gear selector boasts an elegant crystal appearance, and the cabin is equipped with a high-quality Bowers & Wilkins sound system. Under the hood, a 617-horsepower twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 engine routes power to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission. Consequently, BMW claims that the Skytop can accelerate from zero to 62 mph in just 3.3 seconds.
Market Availability
Currently, the Skytop is reported to be completely sold out. While there is no official pricing disclosed for the fortunate 50 buyers, it was rumored that the concept was expected to retail for a staggering $542,000.
Conclusion
The BMW Skytop concept represents a remarkable blend of cutting-edge design and exceptional performance. Although production is limited to just 50 units, its high demand highlights the exclusivity and innovation that define BMW.
