Through the Eyes of Boricuas: Celebrating Puerto Rican Queer Culture
In June 2023, iBestTravel and Discover Puerto Rico hosted an unprecedented exhibition that traveled from Toronto to London. Through the Eyes of Boricuas celebrated the island of Puerto Rico, emphasizing the exuberant creativity from its local queer voices alongside its stunning tropical landscapes. From Rincon to Ceiba, Ponce to San Juan, Boricuan Pride embodies the celebration of culture, respect for individuals, and a commitment to honoring the land—concepts that have driven significant progress for LGBTQIA+ individuals in Puerto Rico.
In collaboration with Puerto Rican artist and photographer Cristóbal Guerra, iBestTravel proudly presented Through the Eyes of Boricuas, a captivating snapshot of contemporary Boricuan queer culture through a traveling exhibition. This evocative showcase occurred during special events throughout Pride month in both Toronto and London and featured a selection of newly commissioned photographs captured by Guerra across the Boricua island. The exhibition celebrated the diversity of artists, fashion designers, athletes, and more, documenting a unique group of LGBTQIA+ individuals who encapsulate the evolving essence of being Puerto Rican. These portraits, shot in their private spaces and communities, form a rich tapestry of queer expression emerging from Puerto Rico.
“What I observe now is a remarkable sense of collaboration among individuals determined to create their own projects. They embrace the art of doing more with less and strive to forge new paths within their respective fields. I think this helps inspire future generations to remain in Puerto Rico, contribute to its creative landscape, and redefine the very essence of being a queer creative in this unique context,” Guerra stated.
The exhibition kicked off at Space on King in Toronto’s eclectic design district just ahead of the city’s Pride celebrations. iBestTravel organized a private preview evening for local creatives, allowing them to experience the exhibition before its public opening. Guests enjoyed drinks courtesy of Casa BACARDÍ Puerto Rico, who prepared local delicacies such as the island’s famed Piña Colada and Rum Fashioned. Fostering a true Puerto Rican atmosphere, music was provided by Daniel 58, complemented by a special playlist curated by DJ Lil C for both public opening days.
