Driving the Cabot Trail in summer allows for long days filled with scenic stops. During the height of summer, daylight extends well past 9:00 PM, providing ample time for a leisurely 7.5 km loop hike. To make the most of your visit, plan to start your hike at least two hours before sunset for a stress-free experience and to secure a prime viewpoint.

The Trail Experience

The Skyline trail is well marked and an easy hike.

The hike begins on a wide gravel road, which you traverse briefly before following a well-manicured path through evergreens. This trail is easy to navigate, winding through forests and shrubland on a high plateau. Protection measures are in place to preserve the area’s fragile ecosystem.

The path features various boardwalks designed to minimize damage to the land and assist with ease of walking, especially in the steeper sections. These boardwalks lead you to stunning viewpoints overlooking the winding road and Gulf of Saint Lawrence.

Enjoying the Less Crowded Trail

The Skyline Trail has a well-maintained boardwalk as well.

Upon our arrival, we encountered very few hikers, which allowed us to enjoy the nearly empty lookout. Although it was peak tourist season, most visitors completed the hike during daylight hours. Hiking during these quieter moments permits an atmosphere of tranquility, enhancing the beauty and solitude of the experience.

Guided Tours Recommended

For those eager to learn about the local flora and fauna, Park’s Canada offers guided sunset walks. These informative excursions enhance the hiking experience, increasing opportunities to spot local wildlife, such as moose, in their natural habitat.

Arriving Before Sunset

Sunset from the Skyline Trail was magnificent.

We found great joy in arriving at the lookout approximately 30 minutes earlier than the next group, enabling us to witness the stunning transformation of light across the landscape as day turned into night.

Different Viewing Platforms
