iBestTravel sat down with country music singer-songwriter Brett Eldredge to talk music, travel, and more.
Brett Eldredge is officially back and better than ever. The country music sensation took some much-needed time away from the spotlight to perfect his latest album, Sunday Drive, which he released last month. He took a step back from everything, paused his life on the road, and even went as far as giving up his smartphone.
“I lost a little bit of the excitement of what I do. I got burnt out on the game of it all with nonstop touring, and going and going, and never taking time for myself,” he told iBestTravel. “So, I got a flip phone and a polaroid camera, and I started playing less shows. I wasn’t doing anything, except listening to who I wanted to be as an artist, and that’s when I really started to shine through. I got on a deeper level with myself and my music and it was an amazing experience.”
Now, he’s ready to reconnect with his fans more than he ever has before. Keeping in mind the safety measures during the coronavirus pandemic, the star teamed up with Chase and Southwest Airlines for a digital version of Soundcheck. This beloved initiative by the two brands allows Southwest Rapid Rewards cardmembers to trade in their travel points for the ultimate VIP meet-and-greet concert package. Eldredge originally planned for Soundcheck to be held at the famous Chicago Theatre, but due to COVID-19, he pivoted to including one-on-one time with the frequent fliers via video chat. For some lucky Eldredge enthusiasts, it was a dream upgrade from those daily work Zoom meetings.
Furthermore, Eldredge dropped an exclusive set of songs from his newest album on YouTube, filmed from a studio in Nashville. Ahead of this exciting affair, iBestTravel chatted with Eldredge about all things Chicago and the destinations he’s most looking forward to visiting next.
Travel Essentials and Tips from Brett Eldredge
What items do you always have with you in your carry-on?
Brett Eldredge: “I’m a huge headphones guy, like the Bose headphones. The big ones because they’re noise-canceling, which is really great for me. I’m an audiobook listener due to my dyslexia, so listening to books on the fly keeps me engaged.
I also journal sometimes on planes. I’ve crafted many scripts and treatments for my music videos on numerous Southwest flights. It’s fascinating how I can think freely while flying; there’s something magical about navigating through the sky that fuels my creativity.
In my carry-on, I always have a pen and pad, headphones, and it’s crucial for me to stay hydrated, so I drink Oxigen water. This formula is excellent for hydration, especially since I love hiking during my travels. I also carry a Tumi suitcase.”
Your Favorite Airline Perks and Road Trip Songs
What’s your favorite airline perk?
“Using my Southwest Airlines credit card is awesome because it helps me rack up miles. I travel frequently, and knowing I have rewards accumulating makes the expense feel worthwhile. Traveling is something I love dearly, whether I’m touring or hopping on a plane for leisure.”
Congratulations on your new album. Which tracks would you say make the perfect road trip music?
“A song called ‘Magnolia’ is a fantastic road trip song. It has an uplifting vibe. Also, ‘Gabrielle’ makes for solid driving music. I’d recommend ‘Fall for Me’ as another choice—they all have a rolling sound that just fits a journey beautifully.”
Favorite Spots in Chicago and Future Travel Plans
Since fans can’t be in Chicago for Soundcheck, what are some of your favorite places for future trips?
“Portillo’s is a classic staple for Chicago food. Additionally, Lake Shore Drive holds a special place in my heart. The energy there is invigorating with the combination of the city and the calming waves of Lake Michigan. Lincoln Park and Lincoln Park Zoo are also among my favorites, as well as Wrigley Field where the Cubs play.”
Have you been keeping up with the audience-free games?
“Yes, it’s great to see baseball happening again. The nostalgia of the sport is a joy, even if it’s odd for players to be performing without a crowd. Just knowing the games are taking place is exciting for fans like me, even from home.”
Wanderlust: Plans for Future Travel
Lastly, where’s the one place you want to travel to next?
“I aspire to visit Costa Rica. I adore hiking and the beach, and it offers both. I’ve long wanted to go, and Southwest Airlines provide flights there. Costa Rica, with its natural beauty, is at the top of my list for exploration. I can’t wait to immerse myself in its forests.”
