Discover the Wild Brooklyn Parrot Safari
One of the last places you’d think to go on safari is in New York City. However, in a small part of Brooklyn, visitors can view some fascinating wild parrots.
The Parrots of Brooklyn
Among the many animal experiences available, the Wild Brooklyn Parrot Safari offers an extraordinary opportunity near Greenwood Cemetery in South Slope. Participants get an up-close look at urban avian residents: monk parakeets, also known as Quaker Parrots.
These intriguing birds are predominantly bright green and are known to squawk, socialize, and perch in uniquely urban environments. Interestingly, they have spread to several cities across North America after being displaced from Argentina. Originally, these parrots came to New York City in the 1960s after escaping from an airport.
Tour Details
The tour is led by Stephen Carl, who has been conducting these safaris since 2006. Throughout the experience, Carl shares intriguing theories about how the birds arrived in the city, as well as their remarkable adaptations that have enabled them to thrive in this urban landscape.
Moreover, guests will have the chance to see the parrots’ substantial nest, offering an opportunity to observe them more closely while Carl addresses any questions. If the birds are not present in the nest, Carl will direct guests to other nearby areas where they may be seen.
Pricing and Timing
Prices for this unique wildlife tour commence at a very affordable $10 per person. Currently, there are only two dates available on the calendar: November 30 and December 14. Additional dates may potentially be offered in the near future.
All tours start at either 10:30 a.m. or 11 a.m., so participants should plan accordingly to allow ample time for travel via public transportation.
