British Virgin Islands Welcome International Travelers with New Health Protocols

Traveling to the British Virgin Islands: A Guide to Entry Protocols

The British Virgin Islands (BVI) have officially reopened to international travelers, albeit with comprehensive entry protocols for those looking to return.

The BVI is an archipelago comprising 60 islands and cays, known as one of the world’s sailing hot spots. While these islands attract luxurious yachts and celebrity visitors, they maintain a quirky edge and relatively undeveloped atmosphere. Unfortunately, many properties and luxury charter vessels were damaged after Hurricane Irma, and just as the islands prepared for relaunch, the COVID-19 pandemic emerged.

Accommodations and Safety Protocols

Popular resorts such as Rosewood Little Dix Bay, Oil Nut Bay, and Necker Island have undertaken extensive renovations, investing millions to welcome guests once again. For the safety of all, travelers need to provide a certified negative RT-PCR COVID-19 test result obtained within five days prior to arrival, along with proof of comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical expenses.

Additionally, travelers must apply for a “BVI Gateway Traveler Authorization Certificate” within five days before flying to the BVI. This application must be completed at least 48 hours before arrival, including the required test result upload.

Arrival Procedures

Upon arriving at Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport, travelers will be directed to the BVI’s new “Welcome Center” for an additional test. They will need to activate a contact tracing system on their phones and wear a government-issued wristband monitoring device. Moreover, visitors will receive an appointment for a follow-up test on the fourth day of their stay.

All arriving guests are required to undergo a four-day quarantine at their hotel, resort, villa, or docked vessel. An additional test will be conducted on the fourth day. If the result is negative, guests will be permitted to explore the BVI freely while still adhering to the government’s current social distancing and safety measures.

Health and Safety Considerations

Anyone who tests positive upon arrival is required to quarantine at their designated location for a minimum of 14 days. Visitors must use approved transportation to and from their accommodations and testing sites scattered throughout the BVI. Moreover, the government will not permit visitors to depart if they test positive, requiring a 14-day quarantine in an approved location at their own expense. The two required RT-PCR tests, mobile contact tracing app usage, and monitoring bracelet costs will similarly be incurred by the visitor.

Expect protocols and procedures for visitors arriving by sea to be finalized shortly. For comprehensive details on BVI’s COVID-19 safety measures, you may visit here.
