Travel Guidelines for the British Virgin Islands
The British Virgin Islands (BVI) have officially reopened to international travelers. However, visitors should be aware of comprehensive entry protocols designed to ensure a safe return.
Overview of the British Virgin Islands
The BVI is an enchanting archipelago consisting of 60 islands and cays, renowned as one of the world’s premier sailing destinations. While these islands attract luxurious yachts and celebrity visitors, they also offer a unique charm and remain relatively undeveloped. Unfortunately, many properties and luxury vessels were severely impacted after Hurricane Irma, and as the islands prepared for a relaunch, the COVID-19 pandemic struck.
Resort Recovery and Safety Measures
Several popular resorts, including Rosewood Little Dix Bay, Oil Nut Bay, and Necker Island, have undergone extensive rebuilds totaling millions of dollars and are prepared to welcome guests again. To ensure the utmost safety, travelers must present a certified negative RT-PCR COVID-19 test result obtained within five days prior to their arrival. Furthermore, visitors are required to show proof of travel insurance with comprehensive medical coverage. Travelers must apply for the “BVI Gateway Traveler Authorization Certificate” at least 48 hours before arrival, uploading their test result during the application process.
Arrival Protocols at the BVI
Upon landing at Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport, travelers will be guided to the BVI’s new “Welcome Center” for an additional COVID-19 test. Visitors will need to activate a contact tracing system on their mobile devices and wear a government-issued wristband monitoring device. Additionally, they will receive an appointment for a subsequent test on day four of their stay. All arriving visitors are mandated to quarantine for four days at their chosen accommodation—be it a hotel, resort, villa, or docked vessel—with another test conducted on the fourth day. If the test result is negative, they can explore the BVI freely, adhering to the government’s social distancing and safety measures.
Quarantine and Health Protocols
Anyone who tests positive upon arrival must continue to quarantine at their location for a minimum of 14 days. Furthermore, visitors are required to use approved transportation for travel between their accommodations and testing sites located throughout the BVI. The government strictly prohibits visitors from leaving if they test positive and mandates they quarantine in an approved location for 14 days at their own expense. All required RT-PCR tests, mobile contact tracing app usage, and monitoring bracelet fees will also be at the visitor’s cost.
Protocols for visitors arriving by sea are expected to be finalized in the upcoming weeks. For additional information about BVI’s COVID-19 safety protocols, please refer to this resource.
