Visit Halter Ranch: The California Winery with Its Own Airport

Unique Access via Private Airport

Visitors to Halter Ranch, located in California’s stunning Paso Robles wine region, can enjoy an extraordinary way to arrive. Instead of traditional transportation methods, guests have the option to fly directly into the vineyard. This unique opportunity is designed for licensed pilots and their wine-loving friends, making it a memorable experience for both aviation enthusiasts and wine aficionados.

“Halter Ranch is unlike any other place. Whether you are flying into the historic airstrip or driving across the iconic Covered Bridge, you’re struck by the beauty of the west side of Paso Robles and Halter Ranch’s place within it,” shared Gracie Nino, the marketing manager for Halter Ranch. “The wines, the culinary experience, the hospitality, and the estate itself are magic. And knowing that it is all done sustainably, ethically, and organically makes the experience all that much better.”

A Brief History of the Ranch

Halter Ranch has a rich history that traces back to 1943 when J.F. MacGillivray purchased the land and named it MacGillivray Ranch. As its popularity grew, the MacGillivray family built a small airstrip in 1967 to accommodate guests and community events. In fact, Governor Ronald Reagan once hosted a party at the ranch in 1970 as part of his reelection campaign, arriving via his aircraft.

However, in the 1980s, the ramp use declined significantly. It wasn’t until 2000, after the ranch was purchased and renamed, that the airstrip was restored. Certification of the airstrip was officially completed in late 2021, allowing wine club members to fly in with three days’ notice to the airport’s team.

Flying Experience and New Accommodations

Pilots and their passengers must complete an indemnity form and provide proof of insurance to experience the joy of flying into Halter Ranch. Nevertheless, it is important to note that the airstrip is narrow, measuring just 3,300 feet long and 25 feet wide, making it more suitable for experienced pilots.

Once the logistical details are taken care of, the flight to Halter Ranch offers breathtaking vistas of the Adelaida District and nearby vineyards. For those wanting a longer experience, Halter Ranch has introduced “The Pilot Accommodations,” allowing visitors to stay overnight in studio cottages that accommodate up to two guests. These accommodations feature fully equipped kitchens and access to the vineyard’s pool, perfect for unwinding after a day of wine tasting.

Overnight stays start at $350 for weeknights and $400 for weekends, conveniently located near the tasting room and runway. Therefore, guests can enjoy their time at Halter Ranch a little longer, immersing themselves in the unique winery experience this beautiful region offers.
