Why Choose Callow Hall?

The Midlands is experiencing a renaissance, showcasing its often-overlooked charms with a flurry of new hotels. Recently opened near the picturesque market town of Ashbourne, and within walking distance of the stunning Peak District, this debut hotel in the Wildhive Collection has quickly established itself. The hotel recently introduced two family-sized treehouses, complementing the stilted wooden cabins perched on a ridge above the main house.

History of Callow Hall

Built in 1849, this former magistrate’s house is a beautiful example of Victorian Gothic architecture. Previously operating as a hotel, Callow Hall has been revitalized by Ed Burrows and Charles Randall, who previously worked on a smaller country-house property nearby. They enhanced the space by adding a glass-cube restaurant conservatory to maximize the delightful views. Interior designer Isabella Worsley, known for her work under Kit Kemp, infused the interiors with creativity, inviting various artists to contribute unique elements such as the Peak landscape wallpaper in the private dining room.

The Accommodations

The hotel features 15 bedrooms in the main house, characterized by whimsical decor that maintains an inviting ambiance. With vibrant patterns and colors, the rooms are truly a feast for the eyes. Notably, Rooms One and Two include window bay bathtubs. The Scandi-inspired cabins provide a serene retreat, offering a rustic vibe with mini kitchens tucked away behind panels for a touch of privacy.

Culinary Delights

The enchanting dining room, crowned by a central olive tree, presents a menu that features a variety of dishes, including cured sea trout, crab aioli, and locally-sourced steaks. Starters such as soy-glazed octopus are delicately prepared, and a “Best of” menu highlights seasonal offerings including sea bass and garden-fresh leeks. For lunch, the local pork pie served with Dovedale blue cheese proves to be a satisfying option, while Craster kippers are a popular breakfast choice. Additionally, woodland feasts can be arranged, adding a unique touch to the dining experience.

Additional Features

The former coach house has been transformed into a spa area for treatments, while the hotel offers a selection of mountain and electric bikes to explore the scenic Tissington Trail – a repurposed railway line that leads to Parsley Hay.

Clientele

Guests include couples from Manchester and Stoke, as well as London visitors, and the nearby Spencer family, who appreciate the hotel’s new identity and offerings.

Highlights

Join us in a golf buggy ride from the cabins at night and enjoy the sight of the main house aglow like a shadow puppet theatre. In winter, gather around the mesmerizing fireplaces adorned with 400-year-old tiles depicting enchanting animals.

Considerations

Be mindful of the steep steps leading from the spa, and while the room categories – Fabulous, Cosy, and Lovely – may not align perfectly with the elegant hotel style, the overall experience remains delightful.
