Just off the coast of north Wales on the island of Anglesey sits a quaint stone pub: The Ring. It’s been a mainstay of the countryside village of Rhosgoch since 1851. Take one step inside and the chic modern decor, with palm-leaf wallpaper and exposed lightbulbs, is a delightful juxtaposition to the classic exterior.

Newly refurbished in 2022, the rural pub has long been thinking outside of the box. In addition to serving up drinks daily and featuring a hearty menu — from fish and chips to bao buns — The Ring doubles as accommodation, offering four bed and breakfast rooms and two glamping tents.

However, it has become notably popular as a roadtrippers’ campsite, where camping spots can be reserved. As a certified caravan location, campers with motorhomes and campervan pitches can pull up and turn the pub into their home base.

Starting at about $30 a night for two adults, The Ring has an impressive 9.3 rating with nearly 200 ratings on Pitchup.com. A recent camper noted it’s an “absolutely beautiful cute site, which has a perfect setup,” adding that the “toilet and showers are immaculate.”

Moreover, visitors can enjoy a unique advantage: “literally two steps from campervan and you are in the pub,” which is “really nicely decorated with plenty of tables and a cute little section that sells local produce and essential groceries.” Another patron remarked on the friendliness of the “lovely staff,” while emphasizing that the “sticky toffee pudding was heaven.”

Campers have access to toilets and showers, and they can also hang out in the pub’s garden, which offers plenty of space to relax. For those inclined to explore, attractions such as the Isle of Anglesey Coastal Path, Llyn Alaw Reservoir, and Bull Bay await nearby.

Pubs taking on the role of campsite operators have become a significant trend, evidenced by the fact that over 150 pubs have closed across England and Wales. By offering their land to campers, many pubs have been able to sustain their operations. For instance, the Triple Plea Pub and Touring Park in Suffolk reported $47,000 in pitch fees last year, while the Thames Head Inn in Gloucestershire noted that its 11 pitches generated $50,000 in income, with 95 percent of its overnight guests contributing to food and drink sales.

Additionally, among other standout Pitchup.com pub properties are Limeburners Arms Campsite in West Sussex, The Durham Ox in Lincolnshire, The Star at Lidgate in Suffolk, and The Lowther Arms in Cumbria.
