Discover Capri’s Hidden Chairlift to Breathtaking Views at the Island’s Peak

Introduction to Capri

Get ready for the most awe-inspiring views of the Amalfi Coast and Mount Vesuvius. As we sailed across the Bay of Naples from Sorrento toward Capri, the boat captain pointed to the highest point on the island. “That’s where you’re going,” he said. I had been excited about the Monte Solaro Chair Lift, a single-seat, open-air ride to the mountaintop.

Getting to the Monte Solaro Chair Lift

Capri is well-known as a glamorous getaway, frequented by celebrities and offering spectacular rocky coastlines contrasting with clear blue waters. While its most famous landmark is undoubtedly the Blue Grotto, the lift to the top of Monte Solaro may be one of its most underrated attractions. Located in Anacapri, the journey to the lift starts with a crowded bus ride up the mountain into bustling Piazza Vittoria. Just off the piazza is the station at Via Caposcuro, where visitors can buy a €9 one-way ticket (or a €12 round-trip ticket) for the 13-minute ride. The chairlift operates year-round, typically beginning at 9:30 a.m. and closing between 3:30 p.m. and 5 p.m., depending on the month.

The Chair Lift Experience

The Monte Solaro chairlift first opened in 1952, providing an effortless shortcut to the mountaintop, and it was renovated in 1999 with new equipment. Arriving on an off-peak late April afternoon, I quickly boarded the lift with only a handful of people ahead of me. To my surprise, it felt secure as I soared over the town.

As I looked down, I anticipated fear, but instead, a sense of calm washed over me. The initial sounds of the crowded city faded, replaced by the soothing chirps of birds. The vibrant landscape of blue waters and rocky shores became even more mesmerizing with each moment.

Breathtaking Views from the Top

Upon reaching the top, the operator signaled when to lift the bar, and I disembarked smoothly. The panoramic views from the summit were spectacular, showcasing the entire island of Capri, including its famed Faraglioni rock formations and sights like Naples and Mount Vesuvius. At the peak, a bistro offered a delightful lemon Italian ice that made for a perfect accompaniment to the stunning scenery.

Returning Down

Many visitors opt to hike one way while taking the chairlift back down, but the descent offered a breathtaking perspective as the Gulf unfolded below me. Upon returning to the lively Anacapri city center, I was reminded of the tranquil experience the chairlift provided, showcasing the enchanting beauty of Capri.
