Caribe Hilton in Puerto Rico Reopens with Modern Renovations
One of the most iconic and historic hotels in Puerto Rico is finally reopening.
The Caribe Hilton Hotel in San Juan, which originally opened in 1949, had to sadly close its doors in 2018 after significant damage from Hurricane Maria, according to Travel Weekly. However, like many other hotels and tourist attractions on the island, the Caribe has officially bounced back.
With approximately $100 million invested into renovations, the hotel now offers guests some of the most luxurious accommodations available in Puerto Rico.
The new-and-improved hotel features beautiful, contemporary designs in all of its 652 rooms, along with new landscaping, nine dining and drinking venues, a state-of-the-art fitness center and spa, and a pool offering stunning views. Additionally, a 65,000-square-foot indoor and outdoor event space has been added to the hotel property.
Moreover, the hotel has updated and fortified several key features to withstand severe weather. New glass doors that can endure high winds are among the enhancements, as reported by Travel Weekly.
Consequently, the hotel not only boasts modern aesthetics but also enhanced safety and durability.
The Caribe Hilton has been accommodating some reservations since mid-May. However, it is now fully open for all guests to plan their vacations. This reopening year is particularly significant as it marks the Caribe Hilton’s 70th anniversary.
Historic Significance of Caribe Hilton
The Caribe Hilton holds a prominent place in travel industry history. It is recognized as the first Hilton hotel built outside of the continental U.S., and it is often regarded as the birthplace of the piña colada.
“It’s such an iconic hotel, so it was crucial for us to bring it back as soon as possible and ensure it returns stronger than ever,” stated Pablo Torres, General Manager, to Travel Weekly. “It’s important for the company, our guests, the community, and our team members. We couldn’t be happier to reopen.”
Remarkably, about 80 percent of the hotel’s staff prior to Hurricane Maria have returned, meaning that frequent visitors might encounter some familiar faces during their stay.
Tourism is a vital industry in Puerto Rico, and following Hurricane Maria, several campaigns, including one featuring Lin-Manuel Miranda, have been initiated to promote travel to the island and other locations in the Caribbean, thereby aiding the local economy.
