Explore Carlsbad Caverns: A Virtual Tour 750 Feet Below Ground

Explore Carlsbad Caverns Virtually

The National Parks Service (NPS) has long provided virtual experiences of some of its renowned parks, enabling people globally to discover them digitally. One of the most fascinating experiences is the virtual visit to Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico.

According to NPS, the park features “high ancient sea ledges, deep rocky canyons, flowering cactus, and desert wildlife”—all treasures above the ground in the Chihuahuan Desert. Hidden beneath the surface are over 119 caves, formed when sulfuric acid dissolved limestone, creating caverns of various sizes.

Remarkable History and Formations

The park service further explained that the area possesses a rich and diverse history. Human activities—ranging from prehistoric and historic American Indian occupations to European exploration and settlement—have left lasting reminders of their presence, contributing to the park’s storied past.

Visitor Information

In-person visitors can make online reservations to descend 750 feet into the caverns, allowing them to explore the otherworldly cave formations at their own pace.

However, for those not able to visit physically, there’s an incredible opportunity to join a virtual exploration with a park ranger. The tour begins with an enlightening introduction, informing participants that the cave swallows they see flying during the day will soon be replaced by “hundreds of thousands of Brazilian free-tailed bats.”

As the experience unfolds, virtual visitors can navigate through the caves, gaining insights about echolocation, mimicking the movements of one of the bats.

Subsequently, participants are guided into the Big Room—an expansive cave structure that spans the size of over six football fields, making it the “largest single cave chamber in North America.” This extraordinary feature showcases the park’s natural beauty and geological complexity.

Moreover, the tour continues to unveil even more hidden caverns and treasures, inviting you to delve deeper into the wonders of Carlsbad Caverns.
