Keep calm and comfortable with these must-pack items
As an Australian living abroad and working in travel, I have experienced numerous long-haul flights. I have dealt with lost luggage, missed layovers, and countless sad airport sandwiches. Through my journey, I’ve discovered that Qantas offers the best in-flight snacks (mango ice cream bars!) and that Incheon International Airport in Seoul features clean showers and sleep areas open to all travelers. Consequently, with every journey, I aim to improve my traveling experience by making it as enjoyable as possible. Snacks are a basic necessity, as is having your favorite TV show downloaded for binge-watching on the plane. Additionally, having organized bags, a soft scarf, and a toothbrush kit can make all the difference on a 12-hour flight.
A Compact Carry-On Suitcase
For short journeys, you might manage with just a backpack or tote bag. However, for long-haul flights—especially if traveling for a week or more—it’s worthwhile to invest in quality luggage. Ensure your suitcase meets your airline’s luggage allowance and is easy to maneuver. A case with external pockets is beneficial for quick access to essentials. Here are some recommended styles to consider.
Pack a Change of Comfortable Clothes
Once you have selected a reliable suitcase, carefully pack only essentials. Most items can go in your checked baggage, but keep a change of comfortable clothes in your carry-on. Unexpected delays or spills can occur, and having a fresh outfit can significantly enhance your comfort level. For instance, a cabin crew member once accidentally spilled a mango smoothie in my lap before takeoff to Mexico.
A Smaller Bag for the Essentials
The quality of your smaller bag is less critical than its function. It should be lightweight and allow for quick access to vital items such as your passport, travel documents, wallet, keys, and phone. Consider options with zippers for added security. If you struggle with organization, seek bags designed with labeled compartments, which can streamline access to your belongings.
A Travel Pillow
While most airlines provide small pillows on long-haul flights, these often lack adequate neck support. Therefore, it’s beneficial to bring your own travel pillow. The latest designs focus on comfort and neck support, making it easier to sleep while sitting upright.
A Portable Charger
Having a portable charger is essential, not only for your flight but for your entire trip. It allows you to access important documents and entertainment when needed. Opt for a small, lightweight charger, and if traveling with others, choose one with multiple charging ports.
Noise-Cancelling Headphones
Noise-cancelling headphones can dramatically enhance your flying experience by blocking out the disruptive noises of drink trolleys, crying babies, and cabin sounds. Investing in a quality pair is wise, especially before embarking on a long flight.
A Luggage Tracker
In light of recent travel disruptions, luggage trackers have become essential for travelers. These devices help monitor your bags, especially during flights with stopovers or when carrying bulky items. Before flying, attach your tracker securely and download the corresponding app for real-time tracking.
A Reusable Water Bottle
Staying hydrated on a flight is crucial since our bodies lose approximately eight ounces of water per hour when flying. Instead of relying on single-use plastic bottles, bring your reusable water bottle to reduce waste and ensure you have water readily available.
Lip Balm
The airplane environment often has significantly lower humidity levels than what we experience on land. Therefore, hydrating lip balm becomes essential during air travel. A small balm can serve multiple purposes, providing relief for your lips and extra moisture for your face or hands if needed.
A Toothbrush
Brushing your teeth before landing can greatly improve your mood and comfort level upon arriving at your destination. While some airlines provide toothbrush kits, it’s a good idea to pack your own for consistency throughout your trip.
Hand Sanitiser
With hygiene remaining a priority in public spaces, especially on airplanes, packing a gentle hand sanitizer is highly recommended. Opt for one that is lightweight and easy to carry, ensuring you stay clean and refreshed during your journey.
A Blanket or Scarf
Airplane temperatures can vary greatly, from warm during takeoff to very cool midway through your flight. Bringing a soft scarf or a compact blanket helps you stay comfortable despite these fluctuations. If space is an issue, consider wearing your scarf or blanket onto the plane.
