Plan Your Escape – Quick and Easy
Fact checked by
California’s only coastal island retreat is a short trip away from Los Angeles and part of the same county, but it’s surprisingly different from its mainland counterpart. Most of its land is preserved as a nature conservancy, surrounding the small town of Avalon where about 3,000 people live. Avalon is a small, walkable town centered on the small boat harbor and waterfront, with enough hotels, restaurants, and activities to keep visitors happy.

Why Should You Go? Will You Like Catalina Island?
Catalina is a delightful destination that’s popular with scuba divers, hikers, families, and anyone in need of a serene getaway or a romantic escape.
Best Time to Go to Catalina Island
The best weather on Catalina Island is typically found in spring and fall. Summer days can often be overcast until noon or later. Moreover, winter storms can make the ferry rides quite choppy. It’s worth noting that the island is busiest during summer and special events like the marathon and jazz festival. Be sure to check the cruise ship schedule if you prefer to avoid the influx of visitors these ships may bring.
Don’t Miss
If you have only a day, your best choice is to enjoy the atmosphere in Avalon. Consider taking a short city tour for insights into the area’s history. You can leisurely stroll along the waterfront, relax while people-watching, or explore some local shops.
Annual Events
- Catalina Marathon, March: Even if you’re not running, be aware that hotels fill up quickly during this time.
- Jazztrax Jazz Festival, October
- Catalina Triathlon, November
- Catalina Eco Marathon, November
If you want to explore everything happening during your visit, consider checking the Chamber of Commerce calendar for a comprehensive schedule of events.
Tips for Visiting Catalina
- Plan ahead. Hotels tend to fill up quickly during peak times, as do the most convenient ferry runs.
- Pets are allowed on Catalina ferry boats, but dogs must wear a muzzle. However, pet-friendly lodging is limited, and dogs are not permitted on the waterfront walk between Metropole and Clarissa Avenues.
- Expect to pay 15% to 20% more for items on the island compared to the mainland due to shipping costs.
- For the best weather, try to schedule your tours for late morning or afternoon, as this is when you’re most likely to encounter clear skies.
- If you’re prone to frizzy hair due to humidity, be sure to bring along your favorite hair products, a stylish hat, or even a razor for emergency situations.
Isn’t It Romantic?
Perhaps the most romantic activity on the island is simply walking hand-in-hand along the scenic waterfront.
Best Bites
For a sun-drenched lunch, the Bluewater Grill’s patio is a fantastic choice. Otherwise, Avalon is small enough to stroll through and discover various dining options. A reliable rule is that the busier a restaurant is, the better the food tends to be.
Where to Stay
When visiting Catalina Island, it is crucial to have a reserved place to sleep. Not only do hotels fill up fast, but arriving without a reservation could leave you without a way to get back to the mainland as well.
The Aurora Hotel offers an excellent price-to-quality ratio, even though it may not be the cheapest option. Rooms at the Aurora generally exceed the standards of other similarly priced accommodations.
For families, the Pavilion Hotel is centrally located and just across from the beach, offering moderate prices and rooms that can accommodate up to 5 guests.
The Avalon Hotel is one of the top luxury/romantic hotels on the island, boasting gorgeous Craftsman-style features and a location steps from the waterfront.
Additionally, Hotel Atwater is highly rated and consistently provides low prices, making it a popular choice among visitors.
The Old Turner Inn features a cozy atmosphere within a charming house.
If you prefer an outdoor experience, camping is a fantastic alternative to traditional lodging.
Getting Around
Avalon is a delightful place to walk, but if you require additional transportation options, consider the following:
- Avalon Trolley: Operates from Pebbly Beach or Descanso Beach to the Botanical Garden daily in summer, and on weekends or cruise ship days the rest of the year.
- Golf Cart Rentals: Available by the hour, conveniently located near the ferry terminal and throughout the town.
- Catalina Taxi: Taxis can typically be found at the ferry terminal or at the taxi stand along the waterfront. You can also call 310-510-0025.
- Catalina Safari Bus: This service runs between Avalon and Two Harbors, stopping at picnic sites, beaches, and campgrounds, and can also transport you from the airport to Two Harbors. Call 310-510-2800 for inquiries.
- Airport Shuttle: To access the Airport-in-the-Sky, contact 310-510-0143 for shuttle service from Avalon.
