Cayman Islands Travel Experience for Fully Vaccinated Visitors

After nearly two years of restrictions, the picturesque beaches and stunning waters of the Cayman Islands are welcoming back fully vaccinated visitors.

With a CDC vaccination card (and booster) ready, I prepared to meet the entry requirements before arriving over the New Year’s holiday. Upon arriving, I found the island to be idyllic, featuring a high vaccination rate, minimal tourist activity, and ample space for social distancing on its beautiful beaches.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention designated the Cayman Islands as a Level 4: “Do not travel” location on November 8, indicating high COVID-19 levels. However, on-the-ground conditions painted a different picture.

Initially, strict quarantine measures were in place, monitored through government protocols. These rules have since evolved. Currently, approximately 80% of the population is fully vaccinated, with 24% having received a booster. Although there have been some Omicron cases, hospitalization rates have remained low, with only 4 current hospitalizations reported due to COVID-19 as of January 5. Thankfully, the Cayman Islands began to reopen on November 20, adhering to rigorous entry requirements.

Fully vaccinated travelers, able to provide securely verified proof, are allowed to avoid mandatory quarantine. Non-securely verified proof (such as a US CDC vaccination card) is permitted from countries with a vaccination rate exceeding 60% for the first dose, including the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

However, it’s crucial to note that the requirement for full vaccination applies strictly, even to children who cannot be vaccinated. Unvaccinated travelers must apply for permission to enter and will need to quarantine for 14 days.

Essential Travel Requirements for the Cayman Islands

Before traveling, you must fill out the online application for a Travel Declaration. Approval can take up to five working days, so it’s wise to complete this ahead of time.

In addition to the approval form with a QR code, travelers must present proof of full vaccination and a negative COVID-19 test taken within 24 hours before flying. Certified rapid tests are acceptable.

Additionally, travelers must certify that they possess travel insurance covering COVID-19-related expenses and medical care or that they can self-pay should they test positive for the virus.

My Experience Entering the Cayman Islands

Despite not receiving prior notification of my application’s approval, I managed to access it a few days later. To prepare, I purchased travel insurance for $60 USD, ensuring reimbursement in case of a positive test.

Finding a facility for the required test was the biggest challenge, as available flight options to the Caymans were limited. I opted to fly to Fort Lauderdale the night prior and arranged to take my test just before my departure to Grand Cayman.

Although I had made an appointment, the demand led to a lengthy wait in line. Eventually, with a negative test report, I boarded a relatively empty flight to the Cayman Islands on New Year’s Eve.

COVID-19 Testing Upon Arrival in the Cayman Islands

After entering the Cayman Islands, COVID-19 testing continues. Visitors must undergo a rapid lateral flow test on days 2, 5, and 10 of their stay, each costing $30 USD.

Finding testing facilities in the Caymans was relatively straightforward, with testing centers well organized and efficient. Upon entry, travelers receive a card to be stamped during testing, as well as a list of testing locations. Resort schedules also offered convenient testing opportunities with swift results.

Should a visitor test positive, isolation is mandatory at their expense. Additionally, some businesses may request verification of testing status; non-compliance with testing requirements can lead to substantial fines.

In hindsight, I wish I had understood these requirements more clearly before traveling. Due to the timing of my tests, I ended up needing a third test, resulting in further expenses to meet re-entry requirements for the United States.

Overall Experience Visiting the Cayman Islands

While the numerous entry requirements initially caused anxiety, I soon found the experience rewarding. With fewer tourists around and no cruise ships in harbor, the island provided much needed tranquility. The spacious beaches were a delightful escape, making it enjoyable to lounge and relax as one of the few visitors.

During the bustling New Year’s holiday, many hotel guests were local residents, capitalizing on the unique opportunity to secure reservations at popular locations. Conversations with locals provided insight into how the pandemic affected their lives and the community at large.

We easily made reservations at various restaurants, despite some closing due to staffing shortages. Verifying restaurant availability ahead of time is advisable.

In conclusion, while COVID-19 testing and guidelines may be daunting, the effort to adapt to these requirements is essential for safe travel. The high vaccination rates combined with rigorous protocols helped me feel at ease while enjoying my vacation in the Cayman Islands.
