Renovation Overview
After an extensive renovation, the 170-year-old property has been transformed into a modern hotel featuring luxurious amenities that complement its contemporary interiors.
Following this extensive top-to-bottom renovation, The Mills House, an iconic part of Charleston‘s idyllic French Quarter, now boasts modern-day touches while preserving its historical significance.
General manager Michael Linder expressed enthusiasm regarding the hotel’s evolution: “The Mills House and its historic pink façade have been an essential part of the Charleston community for more than a century. We couldn’t be more excited to see the hotel evolve into its next phase with this transformative renovation.” Guests can expect to enjoy Southern charm reminiscent of being welcomed into a friend’s Charleston home, alongside a refreshed design featuring a new signature restaurant, Iron Rose, curated gathering spaces, and more.
Modern Amenities
Built in 1853 by local grain merchant Otis Mills, the hotel is instantly recognizable for its Wes Anderson-esque pink façade and elaborate wrought iron balcony.
The property, now part of the Curio Collection by Hilton, offers fully redesigned guest rooms, new suites, a stunning rooftop bar, a pool, and two new eateries. Guests are welcomed through a beautiful garden adorned with lounge furniture and shade canopies, while arched columns guide them to a vibrant courtyard featuring a charming water fountain, hanging lights, and an outdoor fireplace. The elegant, light-filled lobby presents an elevated interpretation of traditional Southern porches, highlighted by a seating area with a grand chandelier.
Dining at Iron Rose
The Mills House’s beloved amenities include a rooftop pool and deck, enhanced by a new terrace bar serving light bites and drinks. However, it is the hotel’s other new food and beverage concept, Iron Rose, that truly stands out. Led by chef Gary Mennie, the menu delivers an elevated twist on Southern coastal dishes crafted with fresh local ingredients.
“Iron Rose is more than a hotel restaurant – it’s ingrained in the neighborhood,” Mennie remarked. “It feels like you’re walking from the heart of downtown Charleston into a hidden oasis featuring inspired cuisine, well-crafted drinks, elegant design, and warm hospitality.”
Guest Room Experience
Travelers will find spacious and tranquil guest rooms, beautifully decorated with original artwork by Southeastern artist Tracy Murrell. Each room is equipped with contemporary furniture, custom cabinetry, and king beds, ensuring a comfortable stay.
The property also boasts a coffee shop, The Black Door Café, where patrons can recharge with caffeine drinks, sandwiches, and pastries, all within a striking setting characterized by dramatic dark walls and warm, organic hues—perfect for sharing those Instagram moments.
Nightly rates at The Mills House start at $279.
