The Future of the Chevrolet Camaro EV

If General Motors president Mark Reuss has his way, the Chevrolet Camaro will make a comeback as an electric car—not an electric crossover—designed around athletic dynamics and a low price point rather than huge horsepower and track-slaying performance. Reuss, whose first car was a 1967 Camaro, expressed his desire to see the iconic nameplate return to its roots as a pony car with broad appeal beyond hardcore enthusiasts.

Potential Pricing of the Camaro EV

Reuss suggested that the price of the Camaro EV could be similar to that of the 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV compact crossover, which will start at $34,995 when the entry model becomes available later this year. This price point is not significantly lower than the base 2024 Chevrolet Camaro; however, factoring in a $7,500 federal tax credit effectively drops the price to $27,495. If this prediction holds true, the hypothetical EV would be approximately $5,000 less than the last gas-powered model.

Production Status and Future Outlook

Production of the Camaro ended in December 2023. Nevertheless, nobody expects GM to walk away from the name recognition and reputation of the 57-year-old badge. Many outlets, including MotorTrend, have speculated that the Camaro nameplate would be revived in 2026 as a crossover, aiming to compete with the Ford Mustang Mach-E. However, Reuss’s vision hints that the discussion around whether to design a car or a crossover remains unsettled within GM.

Design Insights

Even if the Camaro makes a return as a car, it will likely not be in coupe form. In acknowledgment of market trends, where two-door sales amount to a minimal percentage in the U.S., it is expected that the new model will most probably feature four doors. Reuss envisions a coupe-like design that improves outward visibility—a drawback of the current Camaro model.

Looking Ahead

There may be a longer wait for the Camaro’s comeback than anticipated. The EV will be based on the Ultium powertrain architecture that supports numerous models, including the Equinox EV and the GMC Hummer EV 3X. While these vehicles are in production now, Reuss mentions that GM must enhance battery production to lower costs and ensure feasible pricing. Consequently, this plan, albeit worth waiting for, hinges on successful adjustments in battery manufacturing.
