Exploring Shedd Aquarium’s Penguin Adventures in Chicago
Although Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium is currently closed to outside visitors, there are still delightful activities taking place on the premises. Recently, some of the aquarium’s residents embarked on adorable explorations, much to the delight of their caretakers.
Penguins on the Move
Under the watchful eye of the aquarium’s animal care staff, who are present 24/7 alongside veterinarians, several penguins were allowed to roam and discover their surroundings. As explained by a representative for Shedd Aquarium, “Without guests in the building, caretakers are getting creative in how they provide enrichment to animals – introducing new experiences, activities, foods, and more to keep them active, encourage them to explore, problem-solve, and express natural behaviors.”
Among the most notable penguins was Monte, a charming Magellanic penguin who visited the dolphins, and Wellington, a 32-year-old rockhopper penguin who explored the Amazon Rising exhibit. “He seemed most interested in several freshwater fish species, including the red-bellied piranhas and black-barred silver dollars,” the aquarium noted, further highlighting the engaging experiences these creatures were having.
Adventures in the Rivers Gallery
Additionally, Edward and Annie, a pair of bonded rockhoppers, explored the Rivers gallery and visited the Caribbean Reef exhibit. They observed a variety of marine life, including bonnethead sharks, queen angelfish, green sea turtles, and mangrove whiptails. The curious birds even paused at the unmanned information desk before returning to their designated habitat.
Stay Tuned for More Updates
The aquarium’s social media accounts will continue to provide updates on the well-being of their residents throughout the closure. Furthermore, Shedd Aquarium is not alone in showcasing animal life; many wildlife web cams are available to watch from the comfort of home. From playful sea otters at California’s Monterey Bay Aquarium to observing camera-shy wolves at the International Wolf Center in Minnesota, you have the chance to witness nature in action.
