As the motorbike rider skillfully directs traffic with blue lights flashing and sirens blaring, a vibrant parade of classic cars takes to the road. The emotions shown by local commuters, who momentarily pause in their busy lives, reflect joy and surprise rather than frustration. This heartwarming scene takes place in a quaint village at the borders of Lombardy and Veneto, where nostalgia comes alive.

The rally began at Brescia, a city known for its historical connection to the famed Mille Miglia, a thrilling race that ran from 1927 to 1957. This event created a fervor for classic cars in the region. The Mille Miglia combined speed and danger, taking participants through road hazards and vast crowds, leading up to its eventual ban due to safety concerns.

The Accessible Alternative: Coppa Franco Mazzotti

For those looking for a more accessible classic car experience, the Coppa Franco Mazzotti offers a chance to partake in the same scenic route as the Mille Miglia, spanning the first 200 miles.

Participating vehicles range from charming Fiat 600s to the striking Mercedes 300SL Gullwing, showcasing Europe’s diverse automotive history.

Our convoy of 168 classic cars set off at dawn from the Mille Miglia Museum in Brescia, navigating through urban streets, hillside villages, and picturesque vineyards of the Franciacorta wine region. Along the way, we encounter idyllic rural scenes: nuns waving, groups of avid cyclists, and joyous grandparents cheering from their homes.

Thanks to the support of the Polizia Stradale, we drop into a leisurely pace on the backroads of the Lombard Plain. Driving a vintage 1955 AC Ace, I adjust to the car’s distinct characteristics – heavy brakes and nostalgic controls – as my co-driver, Paolo Pedersoli, shares insights about Italy’s automotive history and its significance in post-war life.

An Ideal Event for Novices and Enthusiasts Alike

The Coppa Franco Mazzotti welcomes various participants, including first-timers like Steffen Wirth, who shares his journey finding a classic car. This rally is particularly perfect for beginners, with its gentle hills and friendly locals cheering us on.

This rally features a variety of delightful stops, including a castle, winery, and equestrian estate. Culinary experiences include sampling local delicacies like parmesan cheese and traditional Italian hog roasts, making it a feast for the senses.

To enjoy the fresh air, we opted to drop the roof of our car, embracing the aromas of Italy’s farmlands. However, while navigating, we unwittingly took a wrong turn, prompting some friendly farm workers to guide us back on track.

We also find ourselves momentarily stopped by a parade in Montichiari, where a police officer admires our car and shares in the joyous atmosphere. Moments later, a wedding celebration blocks our path, and we enthusiastically rev the engine, sending best wishes to the newlyweds.

A look around reveals a diverse crowd of drivers, sharing a passion for classic cars. Paolo Sabbadini shares a notable family link to the Mille Miglia, exemplifying the impact of automotive culture in Brescia.

The Coppa Franco Mazzotti comes to a splendid end in Sirmione, a charming village on the shores of Lake Garda. Known for its thermal springs, impressive castle, and stunning panoramic views, Sirmione draws visitors with its irresistible allure. The atmosphere buzzes as a crowd gathers, capturing memories with cameras and enjoying delectable gelato.

This enthusiastic reception from Italian children leaves me contemplating the evolving automotive world. In their lifetimes, they’ll witness remarkable advancements in car technology, but will any modern vehicles ever capture the soul and charm of these classic cars?

Both events are vibrant and exciting, offering a wonderful atmosphere for participants and spectators alike. The Mille Miglia Museum and the beautiful Sirmione make ideal bases for enjoying the rallies.

Cars manufactured before 1981 qualify for the Coppa Franco Mazzotti, with competitors participating in timed regularity stages across scenic routes.

For those investing in more valuable classic cars for the Mille Miglia and Coppa Franco Mazzotti, event support is a considerable but beneficial investment. Scuderia Classiche provided the esteemed AC Ace used during the rally.
