Incredible Journey of Bob Halicky: A Trailblazer in Aviation

As we approach the end of 2020, we continue to highlight remarkable travelers who inspire us all.

Introducing Let’s Go Together

iBestTravel’s inaugural podcast, Let’s Go Together, is on a mission to connect listeners with some of the most inspiring travelers globally. This season has featured individuals dedicated to preserving native cultures in Alaska and Hawaii, an Olympic athlete traveling the world in her hijab, and plus-size travelers discussing their experiences navigating the world in a bigger body, among others.

Meet Bob Halicky

This week, host Kellee Edwards introduces us to another incredible globe-trotter, Bob Halicky. As a commercial airline pilot, Halicky made history by becoming the first Type 1 diabetic to fly for a major airline.

In his own words, Halicky describes the life-changing moment when he was diagnosed: “The doctor comes in on that morning. And he’s describing type 1 diabetes.” He recalls being informed that he would need insulin for life, a prospect he initially resisted. Yet, faced with the stark choice between life and death, he chose to live.

Overcoming Obstacles

Consequently, Halicky’s flying career seemed far from over. In the podcast, he shares how he fought for his dreams by advocating to the highest levels of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). He acknowledges the vital role his wife has played as his partner in flying and life, supporting him in planning his meals both on the ground and in the air.
