Igloo-Inspired Bubble Accommodation in Swedish Lapland
New igloo-inspired bubble accommodation in Swedish Lapland allows guests to connect with the wilderness around them. The cozy cabins are the first of their type in the world and can be found at the Ice & Light Village near the Arctic Circle on the banks of the Kalix River.
Situated an hour’s drive from Luleå airport, the cabins include outside areas and are contained inside huge, heated bubbles.
The Ice & Light village was developed by Maarit Lindvall, who partnered with her niece, Emma Strömberg, an architect from Gothenburg, to create an environmentally friendly stay. Each cabin is entirely self-contained, only requiring electricity for heat and light, thereby minimizing its impact on the local ecosystem.
Emma describes their vision: “We aimed to create a cozy and relaxing space for anyone seeking connection with Arctic nature, while preserving the comforts of a Scandinavian lodge. After designing the self-contained cabin, we enveloped the whole unit in a large clear, slightly heated bubble to enhance our guests’ comfort and allow them to enjoy the surrounding nature in search of wildlife and the Northern Lights.”
Each cabin accommodates two guests with options for twin or double beds. The open-plan design includes a sleeping area, sitting space, and a bathroom, all styled with a distinct Scandinavian flair. The interiors showcase stunning images taken by local photographer, Lennart Åström, which reflect the region’s beauty across seasons—from the frozen winter landscapes to the lush summer forests. Furthermore, guests can find a fridge stocked with regional delicacies for breakfast.
A stay at the Ice & Light Village in Kalix is available throughout the year, with rates starting from 1690 SEK (approximately 193 USD) per night for a two-person cabin. Guests can rent additional equipment for ice fishing, snowshoeing, and skiing, as well as partake in other activities, such as husky tours and snowmobile adventures for an extra fee.
