When we heard about the hanging houses in Cuenca, Spain, we were intrigued to check out this world heritage site for ourselves. The Casas Colgadas are a set of precarious houses built on the edge of a high ridge, dramatically hanging over a deep gorge. The view is stunning.
Cuenca and The Casas Colgadas
Before witnessing the Casas Colgadas, we envisioned rows of giant houses precariously hovering over a gorge. However, we were surprised to find that there are only three houses remaining in Cuenca. The famous hanging houses hang over the cliffside, their balconies extending dramatically over the gorge.
Cuenca is a Beautiful Spanish Town
Although the Casas Colgadas attract numerous tourists, Cuenca itself is a picturesque town worth visiting for its beauty. We would rank Cuenca among the stunning Spanish cities we have encountered. The sites in Cuenca have established it as a must-visit destination in Spain.
Walking along the iron bridge, Puente San Pablo, is thrilling. The low side rails and deep drop into the gorge offer a perfect viewpoint of the Casas Colgadas. Consequently, how could one visit Cuenca without seeing its most iconic landmark?
The Casa Colgadas remain the highlight of Cuenca.
After crossing the bridge, we ventured to the main square, where the familiar centerpiece of many Spanish towns graced the skyline. The Cathedral is another impressive Gothic structure found in numerous towns. Each Cathedral shares an awe-inspiring beauty, and this one dates back to the 16th century.
After enjoying lunch at the square, we decided to continue our exploration north.
Cuenca boasts remarkable medieval architecture. Perched high on a hill overlooking the Rio Jucar and a magnificent canyon, Cuenca offers breathtaking views. Take your time to appreciate the scenery, but ensure you reach the northernmost point of the town.
It Has the Best Views of the City
We arrived at a viewpoint resembling an old fortified wall near the Historical Archives, which seemed like it should offer the best views of the city. It features steps to ascend to the top and provides a glimpse over the streets. However, this is not the best viewpoint.
To find the ideal panorama, continue past this site to the park located across from the tourist information center. Here, you can enjoy unobstructed views of all Cuenca and the gorge, including the Casas Colgadas. Initially, we hesitated to make the short trek, questioning its worth. It was absolutely worth it.
Cuenca is an Impressive City
While wandering through Cuenca, we often mused about who resides in this historical city. Coming from Canada, the thought of living in such a place, which has withstood the test of time, seemed surreal. Residents navigate these narrow streets daily, retracing the paths of historical figures. Their homes have existed for nearly half a millennium.
However, when we discussed it, laughter ensued. Why wouldn’t people inhabit this stunning city? Cuenca has been home to many for centuries; continuity seems natural.
While the Casas Colgadas were not exactly what we anticipated, Cuenca as a whole is undoubtedly worth visiting. It exemplifies the traditional Spanish town that many travelers yearn to experience—colorful, vibrant, historic, and breathtaking.
