Montana: A Journey Through Nature and History

“My favorite state has not yet been invented. It will be called Montana, and it will be perfect.” This thought, echoed by Abraham Lincoln shortly after Montana became a United States territory, resonates well with many who visit this stunning state. During a weeklong trip, Senior Video Producer Matt Paco captured the essence of Montana, highlighting its serene landscapes and friendly locals.

Day 1: Paradise Valley

No trip to Montana is complete without connecting with its rivers. The crew’s first stop was in Paradise Valley, where they went fly fishing in the Yellowstone River. Although the fishing was slow, Matt reflected, “He didn’t catch a fish, though. But it was a beautiful day.” It’s essential to note that Montana’s rivers and lakes are not stocked; every fish is born in the state, adding to the authentic experience.

Later, they indulged in a delicious bison burger at The Old Saloon in Emigrant, a historic venue operating since 1902, perfect for everyone looking for a lively dining scene and some fun. “I could have won a few thousand dollars playing Shake a Day!” Matt noted about the unique bar game offered at this watering hole.

The day concluded at the Gardiner entrance to Yellowstone National Park, known as “nature’s favorite entrance,” featuring the iconic Roosevelt Arch.

Day 2: Bozeman and Big Sky

Bozeman embodies the spirit of the cowboy, making it a go-to destination for Western wear enthusiasts. The crew visited Head West, a boutique famed for its unique collection of Western attire. Furthermore, they filmed with Alberto Hernandez, a renowned hat maker known for his quality craftsmanship.

While plans for zip-lining in Big Sky were foiled by weather, the team enjoyed a vibrant outdoor concert at Music in the Mountains. “It’s free and great for families, with locals gathering to enjoy live music in the park,” shared Matt.

Day 3: Moonshine and Chop Suey

The adventure continued with a visit to Willie’s Distillery in Ennis, known for its exceptional spirits, including Snowcrest Huckleberry Vodka. A stop in Virginia City revealed an Old West ghost town rich with history, offering activities like gold panning and stagecoach rides. “It feels like Montana’s living history,” said Matt.

They wrapped up the day at the Pekin Noodle Parlor in Butte, the oldest Chinese restaurant in the United States, serving comfort dishes that have delighted patrons since 1911. Matt proudly stated, “They won a James Beard award this year!”

Day 4: History, Spectacle, and Mermaids

A guided historical tour in Butte unveiled intriguing sites like a speakeasy from the Prohibition era. The Montana State Fair showcased local culture, from rodeos to carnival rides, with visitors expressing their love for the state. The day concluded at the Sip ‘N Dip, a tiki lounge popular for its unique mermaid experience.

Day 5: Glacial Pace

Capped by a visit to Glacier National Park, this portion of the trip emphasized Montana’s stunning natural beauty. Known for stunning hikes and breathtaking views, Matt remarked on the park’s significance, stating, “It’s my favorite National Park. So far.” The drive along Going-to-the-Sun Road is particularly memorable, showcasing the park’s breathtaking vistas.

Day 6: A Day at the Ranch

The final leg took them to Bar W Guest Ranch in Whitefish. This classic dude ranch offers immense opportunities for adventure, from horseback riding to trout fishing, and memorable campfire nights. “If there is one place I need to go back to, it’s Bar W,” Matt said, encapsulating the essence of Montana’s diverse landscapes and rich experiences.

Each day unveiled the wonders of Montana, making it clear why this state is perfect for nature lovers, history buffs, and adventurers alike.
